Goodwood Revival of Speed: 2003
Just returned from the Goodwood Revival of Speed. Again, outstanding cars and I will post some pics later. The French Cobra that won the TT Group (the most anticipated race of the weekend) was not there. The word I have is that if you win the previous year, you cannot bring the same car back the following year. Interesting.
In any event the TT race was spectacular. Juan Fangio II was in the heat of it driving a Ferrari. The lead car was a lightweight E Type Jaguar (he ran second to the Cobra last year). These two cars must have banked their bets by placing their "star drivers" in the first part of the race (two drivers are required). As time wore on, however, the Corvette powered Bizzarini, who was second, started to pull away. The E type got lost in the pack somewhere and the yellow Ferrari could not close the gap on the Bizzarini. In a hour long battle--36 laps--the Bizzarini held the lead and won by four car lengths. Quite sensational. I will post pics later on. |
I would imagine that the Bizzarini has been the subject of some Penske style development in order for it to even finish, let alone win....I remember a few unsuccessful attempts at racing them back in the 60's.....
Thanks for the report. |
Pat:
This car was fast. Some of these teams really go flat out from a budget point of view. If I remember correctly, the Bizzarini's had an inherently weak frame that really precluded them from being too successful. Looks like someone corrected that problem on this car. |
Cal, Glad you had a great time and enjoyed your trip to Goodwood. You must be a little jetlagged because the TT race I saw had Juan Fangio 11 in a yellow E type along with Gregor Fiskin. The ISO Bizzarini was certainly a sorted car and with its superior power and was just too quick. Every race was a flat out drive and the Whitsun Trophy with the Lola T70 Chevy, Lotus30 Ford, Ferrari 250lm and the GT40s was the the best. Sytner in the Lola T70 and Hadfield in the Lotus 30 were outstanding. Jackie Oliver was left behind in third in the GT40.Again the bigger motor won the day but only by a whisker. How about the Mini Cooper on pole against the Galaxies , Jaguars and Falcons. The Cooper getting third was a great achievement even in the dry. The meeting seems to get better each year. Certainly no trailer queen / polishers allowed . Jonny.

Sorry about the brain fade on the Fangio car. Correctomondo!! It was an E Type. That little mini did do a great job against the Falcons and 7 liter Galaxie. It was really quick.

Cal,
Your posts are wonderful. The effort you put into these trips is remarkable. I would love pointers on how to pull this off. TC, at least entering the historics in Atlanta this weekend. |
Cal.
It was good to meet you at Goodwood. Hope you had a good trip home. The event was - as always- the highlight of the motoring year for me. I will post some pictures as soon as time allows though I missed getting one of Ol Yellers repeat of the chicane trick. |
Pderouss:
Good meeting you, as well. The chicane trick is becoming somewhat of a tradition in the OY 2 camp. There is some thought of using material that just stretches, as opposed to exploding on impact, to save Lord March a dollar or two. We always have next year---third time is a charm. As for the cause, the rear end is a spool type and it locked up when it wasn't supposed to; thus, the spin out. Going to use a loose fitting posi traction next year. On the good side, no oil leaks, over heating, water leaking, head cracking problems from previous years. Fortunately for me, the transmission always seems to hold up. |
