Vintage Racing at Watkins Glen last Weekend

Tons of pics at http://www.priveye.com/glen/

Well, a couple of us went up to Watkins Glen this past weekend for the Zippo Classic Vintage Races.

It was quite an experience. We camped out at what is known as 'the bus stop' which is the
inner loop to slow down the cars coming out of the straight. Our campsite was about forty feet from the track but you could go down to the end of the straight at the fence. The cars are only about 25 feet away from you and they are screaming past you. Some are coming down the straight at over 150mph and hitting the brakes to go through the chicane. If any spinouts are
going to happen it will happen there, and a few did.

You can also go into the garage areas and actually touch the cars, some which are worth
3 million! You can talk to the owners and drivers also. Everyone is very laid back.

The weather was gorgeous and some of the Club Cobra guys stopped by to visit on Sunday for a few beers. Friday and Saturday were qualifying rounds and Sunday was the actual races.

One race class had American Muscle cars. Imagine a field of about 60 muscle cars like Shelby 350’s and 500’s, Cobras, big block Vettes, Camaros, XKE’s, Lister jags and Lister Vettes, etc just hammering it down the track? And you, being so close to the action, is really something to experience.

In addition, there was a race re-enactment on the original track through town on Friday. The town’s main drag was blocked off and there was a festival on Friday night complete with cars, bands, beer and food.

Cool pics. I wish I was in that financial situation to be able to take one of those beauties on the track and not worry too much if I wrecked it. I have so much respect for those guys for doing with those cars what they were built to do. Drive, and hard.

Looking forward to going to the Glen to see some wanna be vintage racers ;) :p

Steve,
It's amazing. Shelby American alone had 3 fia cars, one 427 and two gt-40's. You don't have to be a math major to figure that out.

Did they use a cobra as the pace car??

The Bus Stop is a great place to watch from, especially if the cars are as interesting as those are. But an even better view is available from the drivers seat at 150+ and the brake zone is disappearing under you. Would really like to meet you, so make some time the first weekend in October and keep your Club Cranky membership current.

Alex,
They had a Superformance from, I believe, Rouch Racing as the pace car.

McFez,
I'll try to make the Glen in Oct.

A Superformance WAS used (one was powered by a Roush 402W) as the pace car for this year's vintage race weekend at Watkins Glen (actually, 2 different SPF's were used). It was an awesome turnout of vintage race cars - I believe that there were over 350 cars there. Here is a photo of the pace car.....

We also recorded some on-track video of the Superformance cars on Sunday between the race events (this is me driving SP887). A great time was had by all that attended!!!

I will let you all know when we get the photos from the weekend online...
The field for the AP and BP cars included several Shelby and AC Cobras. There were several cars there originally raced by Mark Donahue, and I believe that one of his old Sunoco Camaros came in 3rd. The number of cars on the grid for most of the races was larger than back in the late 60's and early 70's!!!
Here is a photo of one of Mark Donahue's early Can-Am cars...

Roscoe,
Does that Chrysler bike really run? Did they ride it on the track?

They did some burnouts for the fans but did not take it on the track.

Roscoe,
McFEz is most certainly correct. While it is thrilling to watch the old pros run the Vintage iron at the Glen It is way more exciting to drive the same track as the pros once did. Like JM says Pocono= Ruth Buzzi
Watkins Glen = Pam Anderson

We will be waiting for you at the Glen.
