Shelby Dragster???

Since the caption sounds like it had a pink(color)engine, I thought I would let those that are unaware know, Ed Pink was a big engine builder at the time.

Yes, how iroinic. Two of the best engine builders to come out of the 60's were Keith Black and Ed Pink.

Indeed it is, a local guy bought 2 of them when Holman & Moody had their big garage sale a few decades back for $800 a piece. Try and find a head for one now, at that price:D .

I remember the cammers well. They gave the Chrysler guys fits for a few years in the sixties.
I have always wondered what would have happened had they had the development program that went on with the Chrysler Hemis. I think that this motor made 600 hp with a single Holley on pump gas. Also, if I am not mistaken, Don Prudhomme won the NHRA Springnationals with this car. I have seen a couple of these in Cobras |
The cammers biggest drawback was the looonnng timing chains, one head had to be advanced in order for it to be in time as the chain stretched at speed. Not your typical tuning trick, now you can get a geardrive set for them that eliminates that... for a very hefty sum.

That is interesting about the chain being so long the left side wasn't sure where the right side was at. Makes sense, kinda like when Jamo hauls ass I think he has to make two trips.......

I think that Earl Wade who used to tune for "Dyno" Don Nicholson was very good at setting up the cammer.
I saw their car run at Irwindale Raceway and it was very impressive to say the least. There was also a Top Fuel car at Indy just a few years ago with one on it. I think the guys name was Chuck Seyler. He was still convinced that the cammer would run with the Mopar Hemi and it did run very well to be as out of date as it was and of course he was very low buck. Given the money and the time for development I believe that it could be competitive especially with the gear dive instead of the chain. |
That chain was what, 9 to 12 feet long?

Not only is it long ,it's heavy. Think of all that rotating mass. I think Chuck Seyler is the guy that developed(or helped) the gear drive. He also had his hands in on the Boss 429's for a while (maybe still does).
