How do you get a Ford 9 inch to not leak?
It seems all of the ones I see are leaking where the third member meets the housing. . . |

Clean both mating surfaces with tolulene or MEK apply a consistant bead of "high temp." silicone sealer to both surfaces, lightly coat gasket on both sides, assemble and torque all bolts in alternate sequence,.............place pan under rear end .

Okay, so I guess it's like asking how to get the Vette's targa top to not leak. . . . it's par for the course. . . understood.
I can make it stop leaking by not putting in any fluid. Is that good? :) |

The one in my 69 Ford Cobra has leaked a little from day one. I have tried everything but leaving the grease out. Just a drop or so and never much but I just gave up and quit trying to stop it. I have never found it low on grease so I think the wind makes it look like more than is seeping out. If I let it set in the garage for a few weeks there will be one drop on the floor. I even checked to make sure I had the locker type grease in it. I think the 9" rear is an off spring of the FE motor.

Sometimes it the vent spewing oil out onto the axle tubes. If this is the case then put a vent line on it and run it up about 8-12" like a fuel vent. Unfortunately, this did not solve my housing from slooooowly dripping......drop by drop......little by little.

on a slightly more serious note, the main seal leak you may have.. (LOL).. will blow back with your tailpeice leak and drip from the rear end looking just like a rear end seal...

Off the wall but.........
Not putting any fluid in it comes to mind. About going down to the pharmacy and get a box of Depends. Easy on and off. I think they even have some with rubber duckies printed on them. When they get soaked, throw it away, top it off and put on a new one.

If you are trying to seal the 3rd member to the housing go to your local Toyota dealer's parts department and ask them for a tube of their transaxle case sealer. It's expensive, approx $16 retail for what is a pretty large tube, clean both mating surfaces with either brake kleen or some kind of alcohol based cleaner, let it dry and then apply a thin bead on one of the surfaces per the instructions. Most importantly let it dry for 12 to 24 hours before adding the gear oil. It will not leak. Also make sure your vent is clear and that your leak is not blowing back from the front seal. Frank
