Texas 1000

I am planning on shipping my car to Texas for the Vintage Rallies - Texas 1000. Has anyone done this? Any recommendations or suggestions. I know; bring a big umbrella. I've seen the photos of Kevin Rodgers' famed river crossing.

Other than the weather; whaddayknow?

kevinR 09-24-2003 05:56 PM

first, take gloves and a warm, waterproof jacket. the big block puts out a lot of heat, but in the rain it doesn't do much good.

they always have mechanics and trailers available so you need nothing in the way of mechanical unless you have some parts that tend to go away on you (i.e. fuses).

they hual your baggage room to room for you so pack what ya need cause time for laundry isn't there (too many fun things to do).

otherwise, go prepared to run the time segments (and unless things have changed) you won't have much time for shopping between segments.

the accomodations and food is great (and varied), the people are great.

have fun.

which pics did you see? where? just wondering

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the great advice; sounds much like our own "Snakes in the Grapes". I saw a picture of your black car fording sizeable stream up to the bottom of the door jam. Side pipes must have been more akin to a wooden ChrisCraft! I can't recall exactly where. Perhaps Finishline or somewhere in Cyberspace. Hope some other cobra enthusiasts come along.

kinda like the grapes run but without the always great weather........LOL

wish i could go back again, but racing has taken over the schedule anymore

I have followed your success; keep up the good work. When you decide to return to earth and join the rest of us mortals, we would love to have you along. LOL. I'm crossing my fingers about the weather.

Yea if you have an extra $4000 dollars....I believe that Bill Neal ran this before with his Terlingua car....said the water god really high at some points.

Cobradriver, how can you enter your CSX4216 in the Texas 1000? It wasn't built before 1975 .... (ducking) **) :JEKYLHYDE

Texas 1000

How was I able to enter......... sent 'em a credit card number!

Actually, if you read the fine print...... (taken from their web site about last year's event"

"This year's group ranged from Charles and Carol Goolsbee's immaculate 1954 Jaguar XK-12O to Gerd and Feli Petrik's unbelievable 1993 Jaguar XJ22O.

"The Texas 1OOO is open to any performance car built 1975 or earlier, or any Ford-powered car (which we interpret to mean Jaguar, Aston Martin, Saleen, etc.) In addition to four Jaguars, the group included among others, two Porsche 356s, six Ferraris, two Corvette Sting Rays, two DeTomaso Panteras, two Morgans, a Shelby Cobra, a Shelby GT-35O, an Iso Rivolta Lele and a 1928 Model A Ford hot-rod!"

This is not the case with every event the Taylor's put on. rummage through the web site; alot has to do with the corporate sponsor.

1975 n earlier.....

Fellas,
Pay $4000+ to beat a real vintage piece up on a extended cruise, then they loan you a NEW, not Vintage piece (they wrote the rules FORD's helping), car to finish if yours breaks and could not be repaired to make the schedule.
Let's see, a rod knockin junk FE installed that gernades at the 70 mile marker or so then finsh the last 930 in a NEW MUSTANG GT, might be the ticket. Oh I forgot the money to enter, all the fun just went away.
Texas COBRA CLUB, step up to the plate and add a competition event, maybe next year. I will be top of the list, cut it to 250 miles/250 bucks and a Friday/Sat/Sun stint. Just sponsor it and for non members of vintage and replicas.

Wow,

If I were part of the Texas COBRA CLUB, how could I resist such an invitation? All they have to do is plan and man the event, cut both the cost and scope of the event and Grumpy will be top on the list!

Grumpy, you couldn't have picked a better moniker.

I believe KevinR is right, the food, accomodations and people are going to be great. Looking forward to this.

Greg, I hope you come to Texas and have a GREAT time... it sounds like a real 5 Star event. I've been fascinated by the Texas 1000 ever since I first read about it a few years ago. Maybe one day an entry for me will be in the cards. I have four Ford-powered cars (three running, and '68 Mustang under restoration) but keeping them insured and two kids in high school takes up all our discretionary income.  But, hopefully this year I can take a few days off and come down and see the cars passing through Wimberley or some other location along the rally route.

In 2002 The Shelby Cobra Association of Texas put on the "Texas 289" from Dallas to Carroll Shelby's ranch in Pittsburgh, Texas - but it was a casual cruise, not a competitive timed rally. It was a lot of fun, regardless of the foot of rain we got that day! Click to: SCAT Texas 289 for write-up and pictures. We had entrants from as far as California bringing original 289 Cobras, and they drove them in the rain! Maybe someday we can do it again in conjunction with the Shelby Texas Nationals.

Anyway - looking forward to meeting you, hopefully in the Lone Star State this fall!!

BWcobra15,

Looked up the SCAT Texas 289. Great story and shots.

We'll look for you on the route. Guardsman Blue, Wimbleton White Stripes and yellow rookie stripes left front fender.

Four Fords and two teenagers; wow. My hat is off to ya.
