Real or Replica??
:p

The driver looks real young.

The rear fender lip does not look like it was beaten out by the boys at Thames Ditton, but it could be a dinged-up original.

Based solely on the age of the movie, I say real.

Here in CA, you keep the same license plates year to year even though the styles of the plates change by the decade. Cars here are often listed as "black plate" cars to designate original 1960's vintage. This car shows the yellow on black plates that would be found on a true original.

I don't know if it is possible to obtain a black plate for a car that wasn't registered in the 60's . . . maybe a fellow SoCal or NoCal could answer.

I believe I read that the film used an original car. Was driven by the actual owner and at the time had a 427 cammer in it that was ultimately switched out for a sideoiler at some point. Sure sounded sweet in the movie.

I live in Southern California and I watched the filming on some parts of the movie. The car was a real Cobra.

Cal, I heard rumors that was our pal Ernie's(Old Yeller) car?. Chap in the drivers seat in the pic? his son?

Cal Metal 09-28-2003 06:46 AM

Mr. Bruce is right on the $$$$$. It is CSX 3285. Owned by Ernie Nagamatsu of Old Yeller II fame. His son Erik is in the driver's seat.

It was the car in the movie, Hollywood Knights. It has a Holman Moody engine and, I think, if you check the Registry, it was either the last car produced with a 428 (it doesn't have one now). Ron Richards can check that piece of information. Memory is a little foggy.

Rick Parker is right on the $$$, too. The original owner was a gentleman who owned a jewelry store in Chinatown in Los Angeles and DID drive it in the movie.

The car has 26,000 miles and hasn't been driven in 13 years. It was on display at the Petersen Museum for Shelby's birthday a few months ago. Ernie is the second owner.

Close, Cal. CSX3285 was the highest serial number of the '66 model year run, with 428's, that remained unsold into the first quarter of '67. The car remained on the SA books, but was consigned to the "house dealership" in El Segundo for over 6 months, where it sat on the lot. It was finally sold at a deep discount, after the sales management at SA pointed out that they better sell ALL the 428's before the '67 models hit the channel, back with 427's installed.

Thanks, but no secrets..I'm just paraphrasing what's in the Registry.

..plus a little cross-referencing on a PC, to get a better feel for the timelines involved. ;)
