Hey Grumpy, good stuff about the 221 mph Cobra run. Post as much info on that as you got, sounds fun!
It would also be interesting to get a little more info on the Coupe that ran 227 at Bonneville. I'm sure both cars ran a top loader? So the rear gears must have been "extreme" and the tires "tall"! Ernie |
135 mph at the end of my best 1/4 mile run. It was pretty windy at the end. Car was still accelerating hard though.

Watkins Glen, back straight between esses's and bus stop, 27.7" tires, 3.54 rear, 1:1 top gear, 7300rpm
calculates out to 169.8, but tire growth, slippage(?) slightly optomistic tach, I don't know. I do know the only thing I was nervous about was blowing the "moder" and making the turn-in for the bus stop. Car was absolutely stable and straight, and the steering wasn't very lite. McFEz |
AT SAAC DOES VEGAS 1, I WON A RIDE WITH CARROL ON THE BANK LAS VEGAS SPEEDWAY. ON COLD GOODYEAR BLUSTREAKS IN HIS COBRA WE WERE DOING BETWEEN 150-155. ALL THE WHILE CARROL TRING TO SELL ME ONE OF HIS NEW AL BLOCKS.

Wasn't in a Cobra, but ran 220 mph on a record run at Bonneville Salt Flats in a Monza.
Spun at 210 mph when a tread separated. Got a 360 degree view of the landscape about five time, but stayed on four wheels. |

...twelfth day of ownership, south of Carmel, southbound----opened her up on a slight downhill very early morning, very straight, very abandonned section of America's Favorite Highway---leading out to the coast (Pt. Sur?)---indicated 135---12 mph less than Jamo. Solid as a rock, but didn't feel like steering it too much!:LOL: Clevelands make a stirring symphony!!!:LOL: :D :D I think $1.35 is fine (for now). :LOL:

123mph at Robling Road during the Willis 100. That was wound up in 4th as the turn one was looming large and I doubt I would have had time to accelerate in the O.D. 5th.

Top Speed:
Can't say a number but things were going past very quickly and the front end felt like no weight at all. Did not feel like one had any control. Almost like a "Helium" front end. Small movements felt like alot of movement. I could only imagine what it felt like going down the Mulsaane Straight at night even. Hats off to those great drivers Shelby got to drive these cars. I wonder what he paid them to drive these great cars. Any guess on a dollar amount???? Were they salaried for the racing calender or was it per race? Just wondering, to compare it to todays dollars. Well, over here we dont need a race track to go as fast as we want, we just enter the autobahn and on she goes! The fastest I ever experienced was in a Porsche 911 Carrera a friend was driving, and he went around 320 Km/h, thats around 200 mph. Boy, even a 4 lane road gets very narrow at this speed, and even a light curve can make you sweat! Woudnt dare to go that fast in a cobra, the fastest I ever did was around 140 mph. Normal, comfortable travel speed is around 90 mph. So all my respect to the above mentioned vintage drivers!

....saw your photo in "Grassroots"------why'd they photo you with the helmet ON? Car looks terrific---howso-fookin'-ever, from a color standpoint, the yellow amateur(?) racing blaze-stripes might look better white.....Oh, by the way, I assumed your thread-starter question related to US driving our own cobras---I've RIDDEN a LOT faster in Rick Long's Contemporary with the Cooper-Bessemer aluminum plant in it!:LOL: :JEKYLHYDE :D

Mathematically calculated 132 mph (at a later point in time, of course). At about this point, I realized;
A) Cobras suck at high speeds B) The power steering was way over boosted C) I have no power steering D) The front end seemed higher than normal E) If I get caught, I go to jail (yes, public road..sort of) F) The brakes seemed suddenly inadequite G) I think I'm going to die and lastly, H) Cobras suck at high speeds Now mind you, the drive train was just warming up(460/560), but the rest of the car was not happy. From that day on until I sold her, I don't think I ever went over 80! ~Dave:3DSMILE: |
