What all seem to be neglecting is that the most popular S/C comp set-up is the single 4 vacuum secondary LeMans Bowl 780 CFM Carb with the turkey pan.
The other important is the size of the hole in the hood under the scoop. That is always the clear indicator. The single 4 had a small oval of which I have the template off of various original hood S/C cars. |
sc hoods
The hole in the SC hoods were all made in England before the cars were shipped over here, as they were intended to be comp cars at that time with 1x4. They left the hole as-is when they stuffed the 2x4 MR engines in the SC cars. In fact, a friend with an SC car is the original owner (I believe the only original owner SC car left) and it came with foam under the hood around the hole to seal against the turkey pan (which it didn't have). This foam hit one or both of the twin Stellings aircleaners of his 2x4 setup as SA didn't bother to remove it when they sent the car out the door. The 1x4 setups are common, yes, but that doesn't in any way mean the cars were delivered that way - many people just prefer the lower level of sophistication needed to get the car running well with 1x4 (and they probably like to emulate real comp cars). You are obviously free to believe anything you like.

CSX Factoid...Comp/SC 1x4
SC History,
You have to remember that the SC car were in reality competition cars that did not sell and sat around well after the FIA turndown on the 51 homologated in April of 65. While the planned installation of 427 mag 1x4 MR intakes on alum heads of 12.4:1 compression were on all cars months into the production Charlie Beidler sold Shelby's sales team at LAX to market them as semi-competition cars. No paper work really was ever planned to support this lineage. To the shop and accounting guys at LAX this change over was not "harum scarum" as most state, customer additions requested on the cars caused the "oddities" at the FORD/Shelby dealerships. The SC cars left on transporters w/ 1x4's.... NOT A CAR SHIPPED TO A SHELBY DEALER WENT w/ 2X4 setups! There is supporting paper work to prove just that. All the "Ford street racer" buyers wanted what the flyers were showing 2x4's on the Street Roadsters, so the wanted them. I watched while a newly arrived 427 Comp/Street car was stripped at a dealership of the turkey pan, aluminum heads, intake, and 4bbl, just to have them install a "NASCAR" (bunch o bunk" setup installed off a 64 Galaxie, iron heads 11.5:1, 2x4's [Holley 780's] on a aluminum intake intake. Never understood why, the "doctor" buyer wanted them two fours, and he would pay $350 what the dealership charged him. The set up came of a buddys beautiful 500 he used for church n dragracing on Sundays. And it was a used setup at that. grumpy |
Steve,
Byots, Grumpy, Good start..............:D You all make some convincing arguements.......Steve is known for his dedication to detail on this subject..........Grumpy dosnt just pop-off ......at least regarding the cars themselves...... Soooooooooooooo........here I am again..............wheres the beef ??? KK |

The aluminum 1x4 MR intake BB describes may have come on a handful of cars that didn't fit the standard "mold" described above, but it was not a common part........" SCX 427 wrote: "Sidewinder was a 67 part so was never delivered on a 65 Cobra. The 427 S/C and Comp Cars were delivered with a single 4 straight up medium riser manifold that was made of Magnesium. The aluminum was used as a replacement and supplement since you could not use anti-freeze in Magnesium. " At least in part I'm starting to think I did know something but just not in the right order. I feel vindicated! 2/3 of the experts loosely agree on the historical findings - as of now. Good thread! |
BYOTS, I've seen a picture of that intake on a cobra recently, I believe the owner was in europe somewhere. I can't remember where I saw that picture though.
I also saw a picture from SA, and I thought I saw in the back ground an engine for the TURD, which I believe was supposed to be a highriser with 58mm webers mounted like a 289 intake. FWIW, I measured the carb height of a HR 1X4 intake, and it is only 1/2" taller than the carb pad on the Blue Thunder MR 1X4 intake, measured from the top edge of the block. The sidewinder intake doesn't have much longer runners than the MR 1X4, I believe the sidewinder intake has 8 equal length runnners, which the standard MR 1X4 doesn't have. |
