Stelling & Helling Total Height
Does anyone know it? From the carb flange to the very top?
I have a 9" Diameter K&N filter right now...and the hood scoop hits it....I tried a K&N 14" drop filter...and it worked perfect. However I like the small air filter look better...and those S&H filters look awfully small. |

I'm sorry...I really didn't clarify myself very well on that...
I'm not looking for a replacement K&N filter...I was wanting the total air cleaner assembly. I bought a 9" diameter K&N air cleaner, but it's too tall overall to fit under the hood. I was hoping to get the total height from the carb flange up of the S&H to see if it would fit or not. Sorry for the poor explanation on the first go-round. |

Shell Valley owners \ HELP!
A Shell Valley car has a different height fron the hood to the carb top ring flange than a CSX3XXX car with aFE, now with a sb windsor it's different for sure! I'm afraid you'll have to measure yours to get that or someone who has aShell Valley car.

Well....if someone could tell me how tall the overall air cleaner was...I could measure. I have an existing air cleaner on there, and if it was shorter, then I would be fine.

I can't stand it any longer...
IT DEPENDS ON HOW DAMN TALL THE FREEKING ELEMENT IS!!!!!! THAT'S WHAT STEVE WAS GETTING AT!!!!!! If you want to know what it is with the stock, nearly worthless steel cage/foam element is...then ask that. You're telling us what the freeking diameter the K&N was, but not the freeking height, and now you're asking how tall the S&H is!!!!! Folks put different size elements in the S&H housing, depending on the room they have and what they run. You can run short elements for two carbs, all the up to 5 inches and more if you got the freeking room. The top and bottom plates are thin metal... From the flange to the top of the dome on the lid, it's about 2 3/8-2 1/2 inches, depending on how tight you turn the nut...that's with the stock cage/foam element. You can make that taller or shorter...DEPENDING ON THE ELEMENT (Fram, K&N, etc.) which you need to fit to the diameter (about 8 1/2 inches or so). Ask the right freeking question and folks here will jump all over each other to give the right answer(s), but don't complain until you do. |
I think he is looking for the height of the air cleaner with out the air filter. You know how some are dropped base and some are not. Both having a equal height air filter will set at a different finished height about the carb. So if you measure the S&H from where the carb flange is to where the filter will rest and add any 'dome' for the top, and subtract that from the distance from the flange to the hood you have the maximum filter height (leaving some out for movement of course).

I didn't think I was asking for something impossible Jamo. All I wanted to know was....if you were to order an S&H air cleaner....how tall is it...from the base to the top. How hard is that? I didn't wanna know how tall it was if I put a 3" K&N filter in it....I didn't wanna know how tall it was if I put a 6" K&N filter in it...I wanted to know how tall the freakin thing was when you get it out of the box.
I apologized if I didn't make myself clear in the beginning...and I never was at the point of getting angry...but all I was getting was that the hood scoop was a different measurement on a CSX car than a Shell Valley car....plus what size K&N filters were available.... I wasn't getting pissed so lay off the caps lock. |
Once again I apologize...I didn't mean to sound like I was complaining or sound like I was chewing on anyone...I thought I was asking a simple question. But you didnt have to yell at me. :-(

sorry for all the unnecessary yelling going on here, no need for you to apologize, your first post was VERY clear...the S&H cleaner and element measures 2 1/4" from top of dome to bottom of carb flange...that does not include about 1/8" of acorn nut above the lid dome or the thickness of the carb flange gasket. |

My bad...sorry for yelling. Borne of frustration due to folks having to guess as to what you wanted, which obviously indicates the inherent vagueness of your inquiry (note that the two folks who responded before me, Mssrs. Grumpy and Sunshine, certainly ain't no dummies). You gave two DIAMETERS of two air cleaners that you tried. You did NOT give their respective heights. [Capitalization added for emphasis only.] If you simply wanted the height of a stock S&H, why not simply ask for it? The S&Hs come with a wire cage and foam element that is really only useful for show (GENERALLY speaking--some folks do use them as they come out of the box). Most folks throw a K&N or something else in there, and whatever element you chose determines the resulting height, and folks were trying to get that across to you presuming you would be chosing a modern element for fitment. The S&Hs are simply a top and bottom plate with an element thrown in between them... In any event, I did take the time and go out and measure an extra stock one I still have in the box...just in case that's what you wanted. I set forth those measurements. Obviously, I, like others, was trying to be helpful as folks on this site typically are. Whatever...good luck, for what it's worth. :rolleyes: |

I accept your apology Jamo if you accept mine. I didn't know that these things were more for the show side of the industry...and that most people stuck K&N's in them from the get-go. I thought when I asked for the height of a Stelling & Helling....that's what I'd get...When I was mentioning the other two air cleaners I'd tried, I didn't think it mattered how tall they were...I was just trying to make the point that they didn't fit...and I thought the S&H was more narrow...which would fit in the space that I have.
Sorry again. Let's just forget this all happened...hehehe I know there are a lot of very experienced members here...I'm thankful for all the help I can get. Next time, I'll try to be a little more straightforward and ask the right question. |
I have S&H air cleaners with foam elements on a dual quad tunnel wedge. Does anyone know of a replacement air cleaner element that is no taller than the S&H foam elements. I can not go any taller than the stock S&H without out hitting my hood. Thanks.

CobraRestorers sent me one when I asked for a replacement for a single carb...but it's shorter than what I wanted. It's a tiny bit shorter than the original S&H foam element. The only number on it is 0828A. Should work fine for two carbs. I believe the number Steve gave up above is close to the original specs as well...2570. But please call K&N and double check the specs on those two numbers. Remember that the diameter of the S&H is about 8 1/2 inches. blykins I don't accept apologies.
