CSX 428 gets Fuel Injection

CSX 428 just rolled into our shop. Caroll Shelby signed the dash.
Unusual in my thinking that "the Man" would sign an "aftermarket version" of a Shelby Cobra.
The customer wants us to re-highlight the signature as it is beginning to fade....and he is tired of messing with 4 webers.
He is have a Momar Engineered system installed so he can lap-top computer tune his car.
Momar is altering the intake manifold to accept fuel injectors and then use the Weber bodies and valves!
I'll keep you posted on progress.

HIQ 10-30-2003 02:08 PM

If it has a CSX number it is not an "aftermarket version"

ColoradoCobras. 10-30-2003 03:27 PM

OK I was fooled by just opening the hood...the ID # was "purchased". The car is aluminum though and is probably 2-3 years old.
This car is a "continuation of the series". A 4000 created in Poland with a whole bunch of "purchased Shelby stuff" topped off with a purchased Shelby signature.
Amusingly, Carl (chief Tech) showed me a picture of his "Shelby signature" on the dash of his Unique FIA.
I knew it wasn't actual circa 1965. I also didn't know Shelby's signature could be so easily purchased!

Maricopa 10-30-2003 03:34 PM

Back before he re-entered the Cobra bisiness it's my understanding that CS signed pretty much anything, usually for a donation to his heart fund.
Dunno whether he still does that or not.

Mike

HIQ 10-30-2003 03:43 PM

"I also didn't know Shelby's signature could be so easily purchased!"

It is a real CSX Aluminum Cobra. What is "easy" about that?

ColoradoCobras. 10-30-2003 04:01 PM

HEY HIQ!
You're close...in Castle Rock and we're at Parker Road and Iliff (basically) and according to your profile, "no Cobra yet"....you should come up and whet your appetite!
We currently have in shop: a Shell Valley for a freshened 428 ( almost ready to fire), and a Classic Roadster that is being purged of Pinto brakes and replaced by Wilwoods.
At the paint shop is a Unique with 302 and Momar Fuel Injection (just a chip in the door of a finished car for sale!) You can see it on www.cars-on-line.com under Shelby and "palet deluxe".
At the Upholsterers we have a bankrupt Johnex we are custom building mostly from scratch. It is getting carpet and just waiting for custom exhaust manifolds from Unique so we can fire that one up.
Lastly we are building a Speedway Motors Track T roadster with a 302 and Momar Fuel Injected as well.

I love working in a adult toy store!

Aluminum bodies are aquired from Poland. Kirkham is getting his supply of bodies from there I believe. Kirkham appears to have a great metal car as well. I would like to see their shop as they are over in Utah.

HIQ 10-30-2003 05:47 PM

I will try to drop by next week. Are you by the old Los Verdes Golf course?

ColoradoCobras. 10-31-2003 08:24 AM

Yes but I would wait til after the 10th as we are going to the SEMA show and the best car will be back by the 10th to see.
Call us 303.750.2808 after the 10th and I wil give you the address or maybe you have been here before?

HIQ 10-31-2003 08:30 AM

I will give you a call in a few weeks. I have never been to your shop.

Bumpster 10-31-2003 04:32 PM

ColoradoCobras - It seems that you don't know much about the manufacturers of Cobras. Aftermarket Shelby Cobras? Kirkham appears to have a great metal car as well?

Are you really in the Cobra business?

Your customer is obviously spending a lot of money at your shop. I bet he wouldn't be too happy to hear of your disregard for his car. Jeez - an aluminum bodied Cobra is pretty special, whether it was made in the 60's or not. You obviously don't seem too impressed by the car, so you must have owned some mindblowing machinery over the years....

If you had REALLY READ the 1st postings, I showed you I was fooled by a good car. Being a novice of 13 months and seeing Shelby's signature, I jumped to conclusions.

Where in my posting do you read disdane for this man's car?
I think its a great car. I'm may be more partial to Uniques but I recognize a good car. This is a good car.

What I do have is disregard for a guy like 750hp that would Bastardize a beautiful car like a Cobra with a "hunchback-of notre dame" hood to cram a Superchanger under an eyesore hood so he could win pissin' matches at the track.

As for Bumpster's remark of me being in the Cobra business....yes I'm wet behind the ears for being new to the Cobra Business, but I am in it! I work around them but not on them.
S & S Automotive has won many car shows and been invited to participate in a prestigious show next year. That doesn't happen by building schlock cars!

Carl Wade the Chief Tech is not a "newbie".

Carl has been building Unique Cobras for 25 years and has personally built over 200 Unique Motorcars Cobras and 15-20 GT 40's personally! Furthermore he has raced at Charlotte, Willow Springs and Talladega. Most of us dream of track time. Carl has lived it. He was driving his own personal Cobra at 160 MPH before I could walk into a bar and I'm 47 years old.

He has been written up in car magazines before most of us knew what a Cobra was, with more articles to be released in other magazines soon. How many of you are featured in magazines!

In a year, I have seen Carl improve mechanical equipment on Shell Valleys, Autokraft, Classic Roadster, Factory Five and numerous other cars that someone compromaise on. He has taken the time to show me good from bad.

Since everyone has gotten so opinionated towards me....I think fiberglass cars are better. They don't dent when you lean into the engine compartment.
Unique has taken the time to improve a car that was originally designed with some American unfriendly parts. Gurling Brakes are crap and you can't find brake fluid on the road easily and its exspensive. Lucas gauges work seldom.
For aftermarket designs...Mustang II front ends were never made to go fast and Pinto brakes were never made to stop a V-8. If straight axles are so great then why is the world building Independent suspension cars. AND the original cars were IRS.
If you're gonna build it...build it right.

If you want to call me a "newbie" so be it. I am. I work in a great shop. I write these postings because the guys that really know their Sh*$ don't type...they're busy building cars. What about you? Or are you just busy throwing barbs and building junk.
I'm off my soapbox now...

Let's put this behind us and not turn this into a ***** session as some other bulletin boards on other websites have become.
I only posted this to let the viewers know that we had an interesting project. Taking a stock manifold and turning it into a fuel injected car and retaining the Weber look.

WOW!:JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE

I would think you would just address the fact that 750hp may have read a little more into your post than you intended instead of just jumping in and insulting his car. The hood is not exactly to my taste either but at least it has a function. The rest of his car is nothing short of impressive,I am stunned everytime I see a picture of the engine bay.

I could be wrong but I am not sure that is good practice for someone trying to drum up a little business on this site.

Defending your viewpoint is one thing but out and out attacking someone and their car with personal insults I think is uncalled for.

Ignore him Craig ,you built the car the way YOU wanted and his opinion doesn't mean s**t. I personally think it is pretty impressive, but my opinion doesn't mean s**t either.

Have a good one,
Dan

Keep it up, guys, and somebody's gonna make you kiss and make up.

Yeah, yeah, I know: "He started it!", "Huh-uh, HE did!"

Keep it up, guys, and we'll gang up on you and take away your Cobras and send you to your rooms without supper. Always play nice in the sandbox, and if you can't, play somewhere else.

Now, back to the original thread...

I'm interested in hearing more about this 428 fuel injection. ColoradoCobras, can you give us an update? Does the owner anticipate an increase in fuel economy and horsepower with this move? What motivates the owner to make the change (other than struggling with the webers?)? This sounds like a pretty cool induction system.

Always interesting to hear developing technology.

If it's any consolation to you - I knew the hood was ugly as soon as we made it. ;) I had an authentic looking Cobra before this one, and sold it to build the Hunchback. My car is not a replica of Shelby's finest - it was simply the lightest / fastest car that I could build within our local Department of Transport rules. Thanks for looking at my photos, though :3DSMILE:

OK - back to your disdain for the customer's car. Your highlighting of the word "purchased" throught your second reply struck me as identical to the attitude of the Real vs Original debates. By highlighting that the 4000 had an assortment of "purchased" Shelby parts fitted, it looks like you're showing the car up as some kind of imposter.....

Hey, I might have misread your writing style, but at the end of the day, you don't appear to be doing the shop any favours by your own attitude.

Dan - I'm glad that you didn't defend my hood. I might have had to send you to the eye specialist.... Someone came up to me at a gas station a little while back, saying that they were building a Cobra and that they wanted to know which company sold my style of hood. I told them that it's an orphan, so he wanted to buy my hood outright...... What's with some people ??? %/

HIQ 11-03-2003 03:42 PM

I may have to go visit Colorado Cobras and help him understand the ground rules here at CC.

#1. There is a TON of knowlege here so don't try to pass off BS as facts
#2. Ask intelligent questions and you will get intelligent answers
#3. If you are posting "information" as a Vendor make sure it is full of information and short on fluf or you will get ignored

The vendors that gain a good reputation here at CC makes lots of friends by providing timely and accurate information. IF he wants to be of use here at CC post pictures and detailed technical information about your product or project are always appreciated.

He needs to remember he is representing his company here at CC

ColoradoCobras. 11-03-2003 04:23 PM

Thanks DKING

The owner is tired of dialing 4 Webers... you bet!
The brains will be handled by Haltech computer systems and furnished by Dave Cimbura of Momar Fuel Injection Systems www.momarefi.com.
Dave is also working with the machine shop to machine threaded holes in the stock intake manifold to accomodate the injectors that will hide low and to the inside edge of the Weber Carb bodies. This will keep the fuel rail concealed between all the carbs as well.
Our Chief Tech Carl Wade will build the wiring harness with Momar's guidance.
The linkage and butterfly valves are being retained.
There will be a sensor installed to read the throttle position and send information to the computer as well.
The BIG secret (maybe I can divuldge later) are the injectors which are coming from a very unlikely source!

All for now...the Techs are headed for the SEMA show!

Bumpster 11-03-2003 08:52 PM

Colorado, let's get something straight. You have no name, and your tag says you build Unique brand Cobras. You try to give the impression that you know something about the products that you supposedly build, and you make comments about different brands of Cobras, showing little knowledge about the products and the industry in which you supposedly work. Then you get defensive when I dare to question your qualifications? If you had explained something more about yourself up front, your lack of knowledge would have been more understandable. Do yourself a big favor and listen closely to HIQ if he visits you, or at least read his last post. Nobody is here to blast you. I'm happy that you work around Cobras and among people who are experienced and knowledgable about them, you are very lucky and I envy that.

ColoradoCobras:
I sure everyone on CC would be interested in seeing some pictures as this system materializes. This is a very unique system for an FE, and I'm certainly interested in how it performs once done.

Uh, you may want to post the pictures on another thread. This one seems to have gotten a little off track...
