Foam in gas tank
What are the pro's and con's of NOT running foam blocks in your fuel tank? I'm getting tired of it moving up against my fuel gauge arm, giving me false readings.

The pro's are if you spilt your tank open in a crash fuel won't fly all over the place, con's when the foam brakes down it plugs your fuel system unless you change it every two years. Mike

How do you change the foam?

Depending on how your tank is set up you need to remove the filler and/or the sending unit to gain access to the inside of the tank and then just pull the foam blocks out through the largest available opening. Of course depending on your car, if you do not have ready access to the top of the tank, then you will have to drop the tank first. The foam blocks will be larger than the hole that you need to pull it through but they are essentially just a sponge and can be compressed to pull it through. I highly recommend that you do this with an empty tank.

Is every two years accurate? If thats true Im guessing that Im due soon. It actually sounds pretty dangerous. Your right! That tank better be empty. I'll bet when you are done everything in and around your garage and house smells like gas for a month including your wife.

It's not quite that bad. I have a 4" opening in my tank and I had three blocks of foam in my tank. I ran most of the fuel out of my tank and drained the rest plus I wore some nitrite gloves. I changed mine after one year because I was affraid of getting the debris in my filter and pump. After I got the old ones out I just set them outside the garage for a few hours and they evaporated enough that I could put them in a plastic bag and take them down to the recycle center with my old oil. The foam blocks are cheap enough and the procedure is one of the easiest things I have done concerning the Cobra. Clois |
