Texas 1000
Just returned from the Texas 1000 vintage car rally. 36 cars, mostly east coast. Lots of older Italian iron all very nicely maintained. The hill country of Texas is a fine venue for driving cobras. My son also came along in a '66 427 cid vette roadster. A great way to spend some time together.
The rally was very well organized and is more of a tour with directions rather than a full blown gimmick rally. If you can read an odometer and know the difference between left and right, you weren't going to get lost. I also very much appreciated the chase trucks and mechanics (flat tire 6 miles from the finish). Gathered a few points; a point my son now reminds me of at an annoyingly short intervals. The only disappointment were some of the accomodations and I really got tired of buffet meals. My hero was the guy who drove his '51 Allard from New Jersey to Austin, solo, over 4 days. Weather was wonderful in the 80's most days. Did have some drizzle and mist on the last day. Would I do it again? Probably. Some of you guys suggested it was mucho dinero for 5 nights and meals. True enough; but I really did appreciate having an enclosed trailer haul our car back to Austin after limping across the finishline with a slow leak. They were also able to accomplish major repairs on some of the old european machines. Can anyone recommend other grand touring rallies? |
