RAM Automotive was a replica manufacturer in UK that was the first (and i think the only) replica builder who signed on to a program where CS would endorse their product in return for a fee per car donation to the Children's Heart Fund.
At that time, some sources say that the CSX6000 series of numbers were reserved for assignment to these designated cars. |

Trading Times changed the AC to air conditioning. They did the same thing to my ad.

I used to live in England (6 years) and saw all the cobra manufacturers when I was there -1989-96. This was when Carroll Shelby was pushing his heart foundation for kids. And the guy who owned Ram at the time signed up with Shelby. what Shelby's pitch was, If a manufacturer "signed up" he would give Shelby $1,000 on every Cobra sold. In return, Shelby would give an "authorized status" and a signed plaque and/or letter to that effect. Ram was the only replica/kit car mfg that signed up for the program. BTW the manufacturer was guaranteed that no suit or court action would be taken against either. Good 'ole boy stuff.

There are rollers going for $9200 all the way to $36,000 in the COBRA replica world. THis is the same price range as a ERA roller without a lot of the goodies. When you call you will find it's a long way from 90% as reflected. The photo and that is merely meant as a "loss leader" to get you interested. grumpy |

In further discussion, I think the fellas said that one was sold but the one you will get is a new laminate by ???. That also goes for the chassis, the first was built by REYNARD [unable to confirm that happened] but you would receive a new fabrication design of that chassis. I sure wish I knew what 90% means. It looks more like 60%.
I'll bet if you ask for a photo of the plate, you'd get one. Just a thought. |
Hmmmm,,,,I never got the impression the body was a Shelby of any series! Sounds like the body was made by "Ram" and "approved" by Shelby. As to the frame suspension being designed by "who ever" that leads me to believe it is NOT like the originals in any way.
This could well be a very inaccurate to detail Cobra that through some political happenstance carries a "Shelby" name plate. I'm a BIG Shelby fan, but darn I wish he wouldn't sign replicas that are not "worthy" of carrying the name. Maybe this "Ram" is, maybe it aint, but a Shelby endorsment may or may not carry much weight with me, it depends on the CAR in question! Other wise, I might just be "embarrased" to have his signature on it ........... Ernie |
OK guys, first post on your forum (but regular contributor to UK club forum) so take it easy on me!
RAM (and L&R - same company different name), run by a guy called Adrian Cocking, were major replica manufacturer in the UK in the 80s and early 90s. Chassis is indeed designed by Adrian Reynard (of race car fame) and is a semi-spaceframe backbone construction. Body was either composite or all aluminium (if you had enough money) and is fully removable after build. For info there was also a Jaguar D type body which fitted the same chassis/running gear. This is still in manufacture (see http://www.realm-eng.freeserve.co.uk/realm/cars1.html ) although the Cobra body is not to the best of my knowledge. The cars were originally the most original looking replica you could buy in the UK and were 'approved' by Carroll Shelby and cars were granted CSX6xxx chassis numbers. Like Russ says above, the RAM was one of the earlier replicas here in the UK, and rather fine cars they were too. Apart from knowing Russ's car, there is another close by where I live. I accord these cars "elder statesman" status as they had (have) a fine chassis and have been raced with much success here in the UK. Russ - you might want to post your best ET's here for the guys??? RAM was featured in a collector car magazine that I picked up about a year ago. It may be that they make a fine replica ---I don't know, personnally --- but I discussed this car with Gary at Shelby American, and he denies any Carroll Shelby authorization or endorsement of this car.

Well your right Wilf, perhaps I should have waited for an up-date from somebody on what a "Ram" is was.
Perhaps the car is worthy of a Shelby endorsement,,,,,,, maybe! It sounds like the frame and suspension are indeed quite different than the originals. Could be a good thing,,,,, I guess. I'll remain skeptical of the car offered for sale at this point as to it's "worth" and what exactly it comes with, a 6000 or 4000 series number? Ernie |
I have seen this car in person. The owner said he started this car in the 80s if i remember right. He has several old race cars under his house that he raced while living overseas. The cobra is real ruff!! It has been for sale for a long time.
