California Car Tax
FYI, it just came over our news wire"
Gov Schwarzenegger repeals California's $4.3 Bln Car Tax Hike as First Offical Act! Congrats to our West Coast brethren! |
In the same news clip it was also stated that by doing this he has added $4 B to the $10 B deficit that he has claimed he is going to balance. Now he has to worry about balancing a $14 B deficit instead of $10 B one. At least he is keeping a campaign promise unlike most politicians.
There are only two ways to get rid of a deficit, increase taxes or cut costs. It will be interesting to see how he tries to do it. If CA government spending is anything like here, there are plenty of costs that can be cut. Wayne |
How about getting rid of all the illegal immigrants instead of making it easier to work, drive, get bank accounts, etc and put Americans to work who can pay taxes!
The tax Californians pay on their cars annually is rediculious. What was the sales tax originally? Rick |
For a friend, renewing the registration on his two year old Ford pickup was $900.00 Used to be $300.
|
Sales tax vary by region. In Los Angeles, it is 8.25% probably the highest in Calif. So if your car cost $50K the sales tax is $4,125 plus doc fee, smog, and transfer (if any) and license fee.

I was hoping this was going to happen, 'cuz we So Cal residents would benefit most. This validates my strategy of ordering the car pre-election and taking delivery after the first of the year.... Way to go, Governator!!! That leaves a few more $$ available for upgrades:D

Regardless, it's going to be a great show in California. |
I wonder if the big guy knows there are 1,000 million in a billion! The 4 billion he just repealed is really 4,000 million dollars. Quite a bit of money to find somewhere else. Like my mom used to say "Be careful what you wish for!".

A few years ago, California was well into the black by a few billion! State of California sent everyone about $60 as a rebate. There is FAR too much spending at the State level. Make the cuts there. Less welfare, for a start.
|
He said he would do it if elected.
As of today, he is 1 for 1. IMHO, it was nonsense to try to make up a portion of the deficit by screwing the car owner who has been paying a proportional amount for yearly registration. Mine comes up in April and now I can spend the money saved by the repeal on my bi-annual smog fiasco. |
Edley,
What is the auto tax that he cut? Was it a yearly registration fee? |
He just cut the registration fees back. Not the sales tax!
It is amazing how fast the politicians can get attached to taxes in a hurry. He only cut what was put into place just this October. We are back to high taxes as usual, not the 300% that has been in effect for the last 6 weeks. That new tax, devestated the California car sales. Down aproximately 36% from a year ago. The money was slated for local police and safety departments. If it wasn't for the crime, the gangs, the shooting, drugs maybe the local law enforcement wouldn't need the additonal monies. Solution is not keep taxing until the budget balances, it is to stop the spending. When you can't balance your budget at home, you don't keep on borrowing and spending more. You stop spending, regadless of how much it hurts. TURK |
Casaleenie, the tax that is being cut is in essense a personal property tax, roughly equivalent to 2% of the value of the vehicle.Ca.has other cleaver names for the same thing, depending on the vehicle. For example,if it's a boat it is called a "recreational"tax. In addition, you not only get to pay a yearly registration on the boat, but also the trailer(also get to insure both).Your simple little 17' Bayliner turns into a genuwine hole in the water that you shovel money into!Woo Hoo.The actual registration fee for my '02Celica was I believe about $30,with added fees it was $430.Imagine paying these fees on a Navigator, motorhome,Lexus for the wife,a couple of motorcycles,a boat, etc. Is it any wonder we had a revolt?
Whoops! Almost forgot fee for biannual smog checks! |
The part I hate is the fact that you have to pay a state sales tax on a used car. It seems rather redundant to pay it several times for the same car just because it changed hands.
|
Y'know what's strange. There were several posts on this thread that actually defended the recent tax on registrations. Where does it end folks? CA is in such bad shape BECAUSE of taxes. Companies leave, people move, politicians give away more and more to undeserving (and sometimes illegal) persons. Government was never meant to be this big and this controlling. YOU HAVE TO CUT THE SPENDING!! You cannot keep increasing the amount you confiscate from hard working citizens and throw it away on people that don't deserve it. Anyone hear of the Laffer Curve?.....Helllooooo?

Here is a little story that helps the young liberals understand....
There was a young teenage girl that was about to finish her first year of college. She considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat and her father was a rather staunch Republican. One day, she was challenging her father on his beliefs and his opposition to programs like welfare. He stopped her and asked her how she was doing in school. She answered that she had a 4.0 GPA but it was really tough. She had to study all the time, never had time to go out and party and often went sleepless because all of the studying. She didn't have time for a boyfriend and didn't really have many college friends because of all her studying. He then asked how her friend Mary, that was attending the same college, was doing. She replied that she was barely getting by. She had a 2.0 GPA, never studied. Was very popular on campus and was at parties all the time. She often wouldn't show up for classes because she was hung over. He then asked his daughter why she didn't go to the Dean's office and ask why she couldn't take 1.0 off her 4.0 and give it to her friend that only had a 2.0. That way they would both have a 3.0 GPA. The daughter fired back and said "that wouldn't be fair, I worked really hard for mine and my friend has done nothing." The father smiled and said: "Welcome to the Republican Party." I understand that the lefties in San Francisco raised the minimum wage to $8.50 an hour?? How many businesses will bail from there?? They just don't learn. |
There are several ways that the spending could be cut in this state. Stop paying all medical bills for illegal alliens. Stop giving them everything they ask for. Stop the big pay raises our Govt. people make sure they get each year. Let more special construction cars be registere without all the fighting and then they could collect all that money. And most of those cars aren't driven more than maybe 4 to 5 months a year depending on what part of the state you l;ive in. It is already to cold and raioning up here to drive them much. Stop paying for the new SUVs that a lot of the politicians get each year in Sacramento. Make them pay for their own cars and vacations like the rest of us have to.
Alex, I won't and don't argue politics or religion but since your post woud tend to indicate you think the Republicians are to blame for all this, When Davis and Flores and that bunch took office the state had a huge surplus. It was bankrupted by Davis and his deals with Emron, PG&E, and other shady crap. And just so you know, I am a Democrat. Lets not turn this into another big political debate as they accomplish nothing and just get people who have never met ticked off at each other. I don't care one way or the other as I vote for whoever I like regardless of party. **) Ron **) :3DSMILE: %/ |
If the car reg fees stayed at 300% I would have left the state. I would have paid more in insurance and registration than my wifes car is worth. I could use the money saved from reg fees to hire Mayflower.

Ron
I blamed the republicans????? Quite frankly I really didn't blame anybody in that post. My post was an example of the philosophical differences between liberals and conservatives or Democrates and Republicans. |
