Pics of Cobras from Peterson this weekend
Thanks to whoever posted the Cobra display info at the Peterson Museaum. I went there last weekend and got some pics. About half of them got screwed up due to low lighting, so pardon my photography, I know it's horrible!
Anyways, I'm in the market for a used replica and have been doing tons of research. This web site has been a goldmine. Just thought it would give me more insight to actually look at some real Cobras! Cool. Pics nicer than advertised. Not too bad considering the lighting.
Nice close-ups showing the patina and wear and tear of the original 289 FIA. Looks like it just rolled off the racetrack! How much do you think replica manufacturers would charge for the vintage rock-chip look? Was that blue S/C an original, too? I didn't see a CSX number on the plaque, and I'd been told that the orginal cars didn't have chrome pipes and rollbars. Welcome to CC!:MECOOL: MTrain |
To the best of my knowledge, they were all real Cobras. None were in "mint" condition, so I would presume that if they were gonna substitute a replica, they would have at least gotten a mint one! :-)
And screw the replica manufacturers, I'll have a good time putting those vintage rock-chip nicks on my replica myself - except mine won't be too vintage :-) The CSX-2000 had ripped seats if you look closely. But I think these are original "unrestored" models - I wonder if it's worth more this way? Howard |

For those keeping track...yes, they are all real cars. The Dragonsnake is the first DS car...CSX2019 The FIA is CSX2259 The Comp-style car is CSX3022 The S/C is CSX3041. Mtrain... correct on no chrome, as shipped, but remember a lot has happened over 38 years. For example, that SC you saw was wrecked and scrapped a long time ago...and subsequently rebuilt from "some" parts. ;) |
That FIA was the Bob Johnson Sebring car, IIRC. That car was totalled when Johnson rear-ended an Alfa. The remains of the frame were reportedly cut up and thrown into a dumpster, creating a fair amount of controversy surrounding the car in its current state. pk--I'm pretty sure it is the same car. I could be wrong on that. My recollection regarding the car's number (and/or paint scheme) is that it is in the livery in which it raced at Daytona...somebody double-check me on that as I've learned not to rely on my memory...

So as beautiful as it is, I guess it's not a pure source of "period corectness". Do we (and by "we" I mean Ron:p )know what year it was resurrected?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the DragonSnake pictured at the Petersen is that of CSX 2357, the second Factory DS, not CSX 2019. I am not aware that Hal Heimdal has lent his car to any museum. Additionally, CSX 2019 still has the original paint. This car's color looks too good to be original. |

..could very well be. I don't have any pics of CSX2357, so I can't verify it. If Hal hasn't gone"on the road", then it wouldn't be 2019. (I'll ask the Petersen folks) |

The S/C is not 3041. That was Bruce's first car which is an air car. The car he now owns has been painted the same as 3041 but it was originally red,. It is none other than 3025.

There will be an exhibit displaying a number of cars significant to Riverside, with Dan Gurney the featured guest, along with Bondurant, Dick Gulstrand, William Edgar, Phil Hill, Lothar Motschenbacher, Scooter Patrick, Parnelli Jones, and CS...(among many others). |

..it did attribute the Dragonsnake to Drew Serb... so it is indeed not 2019. Steve...yup, 3041 was "airey" ... 3025 was the black poster car, with the molded hood scoop? How could he ruin that look?:D ..replicating a replica? |

An East Coast or Mid Coast restorer like Howard or Kemper would never agree to paint it a sacreligeous color. The car had way too good of a history. And Chrome quick jacks??? All kidding aside with all the stuff, it's a gorgeous car I would like to have. I wonder how the stereo sounds??? :LOL: :LOL: Evan? Can you hear me now??;) |
Interesting driver's side mirror on the S/C car :confused: .

That's a Raydyot (Some say Raydot) Mirror. I've also seen it used as the Rear View (Center) mirror in some pictures.

Thanks for the info on those cars. I'm a sucker for details on individual cars' histories. Ron- considering your good point about all that happens to cars (especially ones meant to be driven hard), over 38 years, it reminds me of the old joke of the 150-year-old axe. It had the handle replaced five times, and the head three times. But it's still "original!" :LOL: MTrain |
