Don't Make This Mistake! - MPG
I had the opportunity to take a nice long cruise on Saturday.
I noted the mileage on the odometer, and headed out with my daugther in the passenger seat for a nice cruise on some Texas country roads. Despite threatening skies and rain in the area, the sky over the Cobra was mostly sunny. There were hardly any other cars on the route we chose, so I was able to let the Cobra stretch its legs a bit. Just as the odometer was reading out that we had traveled 100 miles, I pulled into a gas station to re-fuel. I don't know what got into me, and maybe it was because the even 100 miles traveled made the math easy, but for the first time I calculated my MPG. NEVER, repeat, NEVER do this! Ironically, later that day, a friend stopped by and naturally we wandered out to the garage to look at the car. Wouldn't you know it, but he asked what kind of mileage I got. Well, I puffed up a bit and then responded with a bit of manufactured pride that I was able to easily achieve mileage in the high single digits!:D ...repeat, NEVER do this! |
On the freeway, at a steady 80MPH cruise, my mileage JUMPED to 15! I have since replaced the Holley Projection with a Holley 750, so I havent rechecked my MPG yet!

Mileage - I'm more intersted in "smileage" :D :3DSMILE: :D

Have to agree with pgermond.
It is :) SMILES:) per gallon... FWIW, I dont even make it into the HIGH single digits! Shaps |
my mpg varies greatly depending on how much town driving i do on a tank. A mostly city tank gets me 11-15 mpg at most, but if i just tank up and immediatly get on the interstate at steady cruise, it will jump up to as much as 20+ mpg. I have a stout stroked windsor, Tremec with a .68 fifth, so i am only loafing along at about 1900 rpm in fifth at 60 mph, so it does make a big big difference, mostly depends on how much gas goes down the venturies in fifth gear, or a lower gear.

I have a combination similar to Hal's, with a few more cubes. I think mileage is important (semi-important, anyway) if you take any long trips or day trips. On a 3,000 mile trip last May, my mileage was up around 16 mpg or a little better if I spent most of my time on the highway. Around town I consistently get about 13 mpg. When I had the motor built, I knew I'd have plenty of power, but I wanted a nice, driveable car with decent gas mileage. By "decent", I meant 10 mpg or a little better around town, although if I had a larger fuel tank it would be less of an issue.

Nobody likes a show off:p Cob- I'm in the same neighborhood as you.:( But sure is damn fun:) |
Yahh... I have been keeping records of my fill ups and miles in my log book since I got the Cobra....
Sigh.... To date, I have resisted doing ANY calculations. I have a Holley 4781C (4150) 850 CFM Double Pumper and I just KNOW what the tale of the tape is going to be... Sigh.... Well... I can at least boast a 3 digit Volumetric Efficiency! In fact, from this day forward, when folks ask what does it get to the gallon... I may quote my VE% numbers at various RPMs. That reaction should be worth video taping.... har har They can do the math.... NOT! Smiles per Miles Baby!!! |
One of my favorite things to do is to go out to this little airport with a 5 gallon jug (only way you can buy it) and fill'er up with 101 av gas. Miles per gallon? Oh pleeease...:3DSMILE:
