stroker engine problem...advice please
Help..
I'm running in my 331 stroker engine nice and carefully, but tonight, I was driving along when BANG BANG BANG lots of noise. I managed to drive (very) gently home, and upon removing the rocker cover, discovered that the adjusting nut on my Scorpion roller rocker (no 5 cyl ex) had come right off and the rocker arm was just sitting on the stud and not opening the valve. The adjusting nut had not gone anywhere and I retrieved it safely. There seems to be no damage to the nut, rocker arm or drivetrain, and there are no metal shavings anywhere. Is it possible I have done any damage to my engine? Thanks Simon (very worried) |
Well I guess since the valve was not opening, it couldn't have smacked the piston...but I'd say there are other problems present. Which valve was it? Intake or exhaust? If your exhaust valve wasn't opening, then I wonder where all the spent gases were going? If your intake valve wasn't opening, then more than likely there wasn't anything to combust...you just had a dead cylinder. Was it missing? Running rough?
I really don't know what the banging could have been though if the valve wasn't smacking a piston... |
Check pushrod fpr straightness by rolling it across a piece of glass or some other very flat surface.

Sounds like you were getting a 'Farting' sound of the exhaust going out of the the carb instead of out of the exhaust valve/header.

Yes it was the exhaust valve and the banging was the exhaust gasses "farting" (like it!) back through the intake. I'll check the pushrod, but they're brand new and toughened so hopefully there won't be a problem. I put it back together and it seems to be fine but I'm a bit paranoid about these things you see. Could I have blown the head gasket? Simon |
I do not see where you would have blown the head gasket. If you want to just to ease your mind take a compression test on this cylinder and the ones on both side's.
I had scorpin rockers on an 89 GT and had 2 of them that backed off... I would recheck all of them, the cost of 2 valve cover gaskets is allot cheaper than being on the throttle and shooting the rocker arm/pushrod through the valve cover. |
