Sadly Wilf's a good way from me. I'm going to drive the car tomorrow to an engine builder and see what he thinks.

Noises
Hi,
It's very hard to find a noise, the lifter may have been fixed but you may get a noise from the transmission input shaft or bearing , or any # of places. It may be a good idea to go to a shop with a hoist and listen from underneath the car before you go back into the engine. Also if you feel it's inside the engine , take the valve covers off again and cover the engine and sides with cloths to catch the oil splashes, and run the engine again to hear the rockers. Chances are a rocker clearance is too much. Good Luck, Perry. |
Simon,
Perry has a great idea about the lift. I had forgotten about the month I spent trying to find a rattle in my Comet that only occured after it got hot. It sounded like an exhaust pipe hitting and I tried the stethascope and everything else I could think of. Then I took it over to the transmission shop and they put it up on the lift and it took about 10 minutes to trace it down. Turned out to be the dampner pulley was worn and and making a rattle that sounded like it was back where the exhaust went by the transmisson. But with the car on the ground the darned sound seemed like it was coming from back near the transmission. Ron :) |
