Then there is always vinegar.

The Coke works because it has a very high phosphate content. Remember when we had to stop using phosphate based soaps and detergents? They worked well, but had to be removed from the environment. Never mind that 2/3 of Florida and 1/2 of western Canada is phosphate rock. Anyway, always be careful using soaps, (simple green, joy, tide, etc.) early in the cleaning cycle. The soaps will lift the oils and then cause them to seep deeper into the concrete. This only compounds the staining. Absorb as much as possible with oil dry, cat litter, dirt, portland cement, etc. Then start the soap application. But put more absorbant on very soon after. This will wick the oil to the top rather than gravity pulling the stain deeper. Some soaps emulsify (make water soluble) the oil. But ALL soaps break the surface tension of the water droplet and allow it to pass thru smaller pore spaces. This is why it will go deeper into the concrete.

Whatever method used using an acid/or Bleach solution make sure you are venting everything--and if you value your ability to continue breathing do your lungs a big favor and wear a proper mask for filtering out the resulting fumes--DO NOT EVER use bleach if you have previously cleaned with any product that has ammonia in it--you'll produce a great chemical weapon called Chloramine gas or straight bleach mixed with water creates Chlorine gas and these gases only rise about 6/7 ft off the ground

the Zen way of dealing with a grease stain is to ignore the stain and consider it a natural progression to an inevitable one-ness... One larger... more meaningful stain... spreading.... growing... to eventually consume the entire garage floor.... one large stain... undifferrentiated.... uniform.... thus... no stain.

Solution.... spew about 14 quarts of 20-50 Redline all over your floor and squeegee it in, everyehere, evenly....

Voila.... what stain?

That's whats gonna happen anyway, over time.

Or... Hot oil, babes in bikinis.... hot oil wrestling on the garage floor.... call me when this happens... I'll bring the beers...

Who's in?

Be careful using Muriatic (sp) acid. The fumes will cause bad rust and corrosion. And residual acid will give off fumes that can cause lasting damage.

Try WD-40. It also works well to remove crayon marks off the wall.

Double Venom 12-18-2003 06:38 AM

Ohhh, now Tom has hit it on the head!
WD-40: Takes grease, I mean real grease, oil, butyl window seal, (don't ask!) upholster spray glue, and dozens of other no-no's right out of carpet, upholstery, off your fingers etc.!

DV...Water Displacement-test 40 :)

Alex Donghi 12-18-2003 07:19 PM

Tom really hit on something... you ever bought something with one of those price stickers on it that the *@!*&^ glue just wont come off Like the bottom of a new pan or something Yup WD40 melts it off

Robert T. Day 12-18-2003 09:38 PM

Avoid using Muriatic Acid, unless it's diluted 50/50 or more.
If you use it in too concentrated a solution, it will etch your nicely finished concrete, making it look like 60 grit sandpaper, or worse yet, may take chunks of concrete off, making it look like your sidewalk did after mistakenly using Road Salt to de-ice it in the winter.

After using your solution, scrubbing LIGHTLY, immediately wet-vac
it, rinse w/ cold water, and wet vac that. Chances are, That will be the cleanest spot in the entire garage. Also, use powered ventilation, such as one or more Box fans, one to force fresh air into the garage, and another to help draw the fumes out.
Speaking from experience (cleaning the deep end of an outdoor pool where I thought I had adequate ventilation(total dead air space), you can't believe how much those fumes can burn your nose, throat, lungs, and sting where you have a cut )

Be Careful!!!
