I just love traffic!!
Slept really late, been a long, fatiguing week, was drug over to a reception last evening, but turned out i was famished, and there was quite a spread of tasty chow. I try to be discreet at receptions, don't want to appear piggy. The trick is to make many trips to the table with all the grub, but to use a clean, small plate each time, so if anyone notices, it looks like you are just having a small dainty repast. Then to stand off to one side of the bar, where the foreign beer is being chilled. I was a batchelor for 7 years between marriages, so I am pretty skilled at feasting at receptions and the like.
Anyway, slept in, then got up, had some ice cream for breakfast, then went out to check on Abby; the day was sunny, but cool. So rolled out the Great Stroker, put on the Navy G-1, toggled the A'sump, and a moment later, gave two squirts of the Holley down into the Edlebrock, and lit it off. Eased up the revs, bringing the oil pressure up carefully, then rolled out the driveway, and headed the few miles to town. Then, running into traffic by the football stadium, realized that the NC/SC HS football championship was about to start, (proud to say that SC holds a big lead in the series), and there was all sorts of slow traffic, so i had to ease along, blipping the HP 750, getting all sorts of thumbs up and energetic smiles from the patrons walking to the game. It was perfect; at each light, i dallied just long enough to have to stop at the light, giving me even more time at the crosswalk to let the intimidating idle reverberate off the flanks of the cars to my side. Loved every minute of it, being all cool in my Rayban Aviators. Then, stopped at at a computer place, to pick up a printer cartridge, and this pickup with a man and his son followed me into the lot, and as i unsnapped the Simpson, he walked up and asked if he could take some pictures of my car. Of course, even had his son climb into the driver's seat, opened the hood, explained a few things, and told him to make himself comfortable, and walked into the store to pick up my stuff. He was just beside himself, as cars like these are so seldom seen out on the road. When i came out, he had dropped and secured the hood. Then to a Home Depot for more stuff, came out to find several men standing around my red/white stripe car, admiring it, so i answered the usual questions, and latched up, and headed home. Got gas, and three small children came up and wanted to know what my car was, so again showed them this and that. Came back, down the main street, at each light, as i would accelerate at the green, would slowly roll on throttle up to about 3500 rpm, then upshift, which just gives the most fantastic snarl from the sidepipes, and at each red light, blipped and doubleclutched each totally unnecessary downshift, just to share the glorious, thundering crackle of the big Stroked Windsor's exhaust. Spent the afternoon polishing my spinners with my new Baldor buffing and polishing system, then did the wheels, and finished up just as the Wife and Daughter came back from shopping. As sundown dropped over the trees, and the cool air descended, finished cleaning up, snapped off the top of a cold German Beer, and came in for dinner. Every day, when you can drive one of these cars, is just a great day. I want for nothing. |
Great story! I'm taking notes....and counting the days. January 3rd can't get here soon enough!:D

Hal -
from a former columnist featured in a local LA paper, this is a masterpiece. What a wonderful chronicle, not only of your obviously idyllic life in SC, but how your Cobra fits into the scheme of things. Thank you so much - not only for sharing your experiences, but for treating us all to a truly heartwarming glimpse of how our stupid little hobby makes new friends at every corner. The next beer is on me, and I truly hope that someday I can make good on the offer for real. Merry Christmas - Durt |
Hal;
Isn't it about time you wrote a book? Merry Christmas Bill Stradtner |
I live in the Northeast... snow on the ground... car is away for the winter.... but you read something like this and it all comes rushing back. Thanks....I just went for a ride in my imagination.
Hurry up Spring !!!! |
Hal,
If you love traffic bring your car down to my area of Florida and join all the snowbirds that make our roads parking lots during the winter months. You will have plenty of time to BS with many others on our roads. A plus is the only time that you couldn't drive around topless is during rain and winter is normally our dry season.:LOL: Dan |
