SPB....I bit back!
 

Today, I made it official and ordered a new Superformance Cobra from Dynamic Motors in Ross, Ohio. I believe (hope) this will cure my drooling and day dreaming at work and while watching The Speed Channel. It has been a 26 year old dream to own a high performance car. I intend on be a responsible and safe driver. Any safety programs out there that are reasonable?

I want to thank everyone on this board who coached me through the Cobra ownership experience. The numerous emails and phone calls convinced me I choose the best manufacture (Superformance) and more importantly the correct vehicle... a Cobra. The added bonus of attending the Superformance and Cobra related events with people who share the similar passion is an added bonus!

Dynamic MotorSports was a pleasure to deal with throughout the entire process. The new Noble 1 and Coupes are unreal guys!!! What a candy store for car nuts.

Club Cobra allowed me to focus and learn in a condensed format. I can honestly say if it wasn't for this site I would still be internalizing what type of high performance car, engine, color, options etc. More or less driving my wife and myself nuts.

I am so pumped up to be an upcoming Cobra owner. Well folks, I have to go back to check out your vehicles on this site and sneak in some final drools.

Excellent combo!Did you get Roadster or S/C version?Quick jacks or bumpers?Are wheels 15" or 17",and what choice of tires?Will you be doing single carb,duals,or possibly a stack injection system?If sidepipes,black or ceramic?Who will be doing your engine,and do you think you might do a stroker?

Congratulations! You're gonna love it.

Here are the details: MKIII (SC) leather steering wheel,silver side pipes ( jet coated) 15" wheels, glove box, rear tire upgrade, stainless steel quick jacks, kill switch, 4 point shoulder harnesses, bug screen. The engine has not yet been finalized but more than likely I will go with a worked 351W pre 1974 block pushing 450 hp.

It is a nice car but certainly not one of the heavliy accessorized big block monsters with 17" rims. I bet the seventeens make it handle so much better. I did get the stickier Yokahamo tires.

Any SPF owners running a fuel cell?. I wanted to get one and for some reason I passed.

Rickyd. a fuel cell is safer and cheaper to do now, something to consider. re engines, easier and cheaper to get more power now than later, so carefully think about your choice(s). Crates are a good and most often more economical choice vs a custom build, and better now to go for as much hp as you can afford. Harder and more expensive to do it later. You dont have to use all the power if ya dont want to. Once ya get used to these the urge for more hp can bite ya pretty hard. a 392 stroker is a good value for 430hp and 450 # trq. a variety of different hp 460 crates are available as well as 514s. If ya want to pay more, then a 427 fe or for usually less a 428 fe. custom vs crate ? depends on who ya talk to. like car brand preference, everyone has their favorites and will support their choice to the end, however, less engine bias than car brand bias. but like car brand debates, the battle of sb/bb or stroker motors will live on forever. enjoy your new car, and take your time getting used to it no matter what engine ya get. bill.

Good advice about the Horsepower. I can only imagine the added cost of upgrading your motor down the road. I only drove a 360 hp crate 351-Superformance dealer test car.. So I didn't really have a good gauge on what I will want down the road. That is why I was targeting around 450 hp to play it safe. If I am anything like the rest of the gang I think I will be wishing for more...but 450 hp has to be pretty fun in such light car. It is human nature to always want more.

Why is a fuel cell less expensive if I do it now? Unfortunately, Superformance does not give you a credit on their stainless steel tank. Isn't it something I can do at a later date for the fuel cell cost and installation charge? Or possibly I am missing something here...not sure.

I have not yet finalized the engine builder or exactly what route I am going but hope to do so today or early next week.

Congratulations. After we spoke on the phone I had the sense that you were already 'too far gone'.

I have the Yohohama tires with the wider rear option and am very impressed. They are a little stickier but they are also significantly easier to balance which makes the car track better at all speeds.

If you liked the look of the polished 17" wheels you may want to do what I did and have your 15" wheels chromed. Dynamic can send them out to be done while you're waiting for your chassis to arrive. They look terrific, especially with your color scheme, are very distinctive, and cost a whole lot less than the 17" PS Engineering Wheels.

I, too, opted for the fuel cell. I'm not sure it's "cheaper" to do it now, but it certainly is easier. Well, maybe they charge more for the installation if they have to drain the tank first or for the extra hassle. My guess is that if you don't do it now, you'll never get around to doing it. The guys at Dynamic seemed reluctant to install the fuel cell but I wanted the extra measure of protection in the event of a rear impact. Yeah, you have to change the foam every three years or so but I think it's worth it (Of course I haven't changed the foam yet; ask me in another two years!). The first time I change it I'll get a handle on how it's done, then it should be easy thereafter. I kept the original tank and just stored it in the garage. The fuel cell is a bit of a nuisance to fill, as the fuel comes all the way up, then goes down...all the way up, then goes down...and so on for four or five times. If you watch what you're doing and don't get in a hurry, it's not bad. Besides someone will likely walk over to engage you in conversation while you're filling the tank, anyway. You can decide almost at the last moment, as it doesn't take them long to install a cell. Another safety feature you might want to consider is crotch belts, available from Deist's web site (assuming Dynamic is still using Deist safety harnesses). They're cheap enough and easy to install and keep the shoulder straps from pulling up on the lap belt.

Are you sure you don't want the bumpers? I know the quick jacks look way cool, but there's nothing between the back of your baby and the front of that POS behind you, driven by some kid busy lighting a cigerette or looking for another CD. Or between the back of the POS ahead of you and the front of your car as you're lighting up a Montecristo!
