pictures of IRS

Gentlemen I am interested in seeing some pictures of any of the rear suspensions in cars with IRS from any/all angles. I tried just looking thru the gallery but that got tedious searching that way so I decided to ask for some help. To anyone with access to their frame I am also interested in the width of both the frame and the body width of your cars at the rear wheel well. If you could post the info here or e-mail it to me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thankyou Frank:)

Sumo Rear End

Frank,

Sumos are designed to take Ford Granada rear axle assemblies ( early models) with later models using Ford Sierra assemblies.

There are even some very rare Sumos that had a Jaguar IRS option. Drop Pilgrim a line with your chassis number and they'll tell you which one you'll need.

Try to fit anything else and heavy adaptation and fabricating will be required.

Cheers, and best of luck with your limey kit,

Tony:) :)

Frank:
Poke around the ERA website. There are a couple of pictures of their 3rd member assemblies. Most interesting is their modified jag rear end with outboard brakes.

Grumpy, I am considering a Ford t-bird 8.8 for cost and availability and if i do this I will have to fabricate any and all the frame work mounting the rear and suspension to the frame. I'm still hoping I can get some measurements of the frame and body at the rear wheel well area from others cars. I can have access to a friends Superformance but am also interested in others.

Tonyvda, yes I will need all the luck I can get thankyou. what I bought was a true project, a body shell, a frame, a box with a partial front suspension and a rear subframe from a Granada already partially installed. I am unhappy with how that rear sits in the car and if I decide to keep it I will try to convert it to limited slip which it is not at this moment. The track of the Granada rear is 64" which requires a lot of negative offset in the rim to keep it inside the wheel well and limits the tire and rim combinations. The rear also exhibits some extreme negative camber as it now sits. I am trying for a build manual from pilgrim at this time and will make a decision based on what I see there and an availability of parts. and yes it is right hand drive. Tony and Kitcarman have given me quite a bit of info already. This will tuly test my mechanical skills but it will end up being my car just as I wanted it.

ST, great pictures, great looking rear, thanks a lot that was just what I was looking for

Tounguepirate beatiful Jag rear esp with the outboard brakes.

Here's the Ford Falcon IRS in my Classic Revival Cobra. It's a wide rear end as well and the front and rear wheels have the same shallow dish but to me it looks good with the 17" wheels.

The things I like about this rear end more than make up for not having deep dish wheels. it's a double wishbone set up and Camber and Toe are very easy to adjust. The outboard brakes are easy to work on and the shocks are easy to get to and adjust. It uses rubber bushes on the chassis end of the arms and spherical bearings at the hub. I'm expecting the car to handle very well.

This rear end is from an Australian Falcon but I'm sure there must be some similar setups under some US cars.

:) Aussie Mike thanks for the pics sharp lookin setup and very much the sort of thing i've been thinking about. The rail where the upper A-arms mount and the support member ror the differential itself, is that part of the cars frame or is it a standard ford part. thanks Frank

Aussie Mike 12-24-2003 06:33 PM

Hi Frank,

All the mounts are part of the frame. The whole rear end was originally attached to a tubular steel cradle that bolted into the back of the Falcon. All the mounts for the diff and the A arms are part of the chassis on my car so the cradle isn't used.

A set of new factory rubber bushes press into holes in the chassis to support the diff center.

Have a good Christmas

Cheers

You may take a look at a Backdraft, they are using a BMW 3 series IRS; M Type as an option. Would surely mean a lot of construction, but if youre upt to that anyway....

I am sure that you have some good fab shops near you that could make up the bits that you need.

You may want to check also AMP rear suspension setup. Works very well on my Contemporary , and the outboard brakes are much easier to service and to cool.http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/s...t=1&thecat=500 http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/s...t=1&thecat=500
