i am checking on this.

newport is a shelby dealer and knows what's what.
however, the ebay item has a vin # of 65x4173. 65x is NOT a shelby number from the factory. this does not preclude it from being real or one in the same. some states don't/won't allow an owner to title a car with a new mso and use the csx vin number, or some states will allow the inculsion of some or all of the shelby vin # in the new vin required by the state (colorado is one such example)

I know that E-bay software has some certain requirements for listing the vin, and it may accept the 65x4173, and not the csx4173. I would think the car is genuine, but the buyer would need to check it out.

I'm pretty sure it's the same car, w/ a reduced price.

Yes, it's the same car. The VIN is what the DMV office (at that time) made them use.

How does a C5A-H block get into a "correct" 1965 car. Close but no cigar. I know I'm splitting hairs but I don't have much hair left. I need to split as many as possible.

Here is what the E-bay description says about CSX-4148...

" Over 40 hours were spent just brushing the hand pounded aluminum. When the current owner purchased this vehicle, there were three available. He naturally purchased the finest looking body. One of the other less desirable is currently available right here on eBay. This is a new car. The body does carry a 1965 Cobra title"

I thought RM had more class and proof read their scripts before each listing. The remark about the fuel cell and heat shielding being "standard" is inaccurate......unless Turk pulled another quick one on me!;) If they need to stoop to those standards to sell their car, they obviously need the sale far more than I. I wonder if they're SB100 cleared already?

Hi Guys. I am new to the forum. Have been looking, researching and of course obsessing about a new toy for 6 months or so now. RM listed 4173 as sold for 95K a couple of weeks ago but it showed up again on e-bay tonight. It has a black plate in the photo's. Does anyone have additional information on the status of this car? I plan to call Dave at Newport shelby this week to get details.

I would like for Dan or Turk to comment on the value of this or similar CSX's over a comparable Kirkham.

I don't monitor the auctions as I used to, but most recent information I have on a comparable car with equal value engine and transmission and identical options it is not all that unusual to see anywhere from $25,000 to $45,000 diference in the sale of the two cars.

Not saying one is $45,000 better or more expensive to begin with. Just that that is what the resale market has been saying they are worth.

That is before Shelby announced lower priced versions of the car. that may have helped lower the market a little but also for the other makes as well.

This is a terrible market we are in right now. More sellers than buyers will not allow anyone to get a good grip on what any car really is worth. I suppose if you subscribe to the old adage," they are worth what someone is willing to pay" they are not worth much.

Then there is the other axiom. "There is an A$$ for every seat". With that in mind, if someone manages to sell a SPF for $82,000 to someone once, it does not mean that is what they are worth any more than one's inability to sell a Kirkham for anymore than $70,000 means Kirkhams are worth less than that.

It just keeps on changing for anyone to get a good feel for the values of these cars.

The paradym has definitely shifted over the past few months. For example, in the mid '90's if you wanted an aluminum Shelby roller, (pre Kirkham bodied days) you could order one and expect to pay close to $80K. Add engine, trans and paint and you would be over $100K pretty quick, and that's if you did the install. Hire a builder and you were looking at $120 and up.

Kirkham comes along in 1996, offering rollers for about $60K. Add engine, trans, and you are in around $80K. Hmmm, but it doesn't have a CSX plate. Some folks, me included, saw the workmanship and accuracy of these cars and said, "who cares?"

In the meantime, SAI, who at first mocked the idea of bringing in aluminum bodies from Eastern Europe, decides that they can't beat them, so they buy all the bodies Kirkham can make, continues to price them at around $80K and promptly experiences a glut of unsold cars. Kirkham continues to hone their well earned reputation by producing limited numbers of superb aluminum cars, again selling to the general market, with the price falling to about $55K.

Shelby announces the $39K fiberglass car several months ago, creating quite a firestorm in the industry. Kirkham responds with an $40K aluminum roller that is a finer car today than the jewel offered a few years ago that comes pre-sanded (believe me, thats appreciated), with improved underpinnings and more standard features. A screaming deal.

So today, you can purchase what is arguably the finest reproduction of the original 60's car in real aluminum with most options at about $45K

Misc: 3K
Sweat equity...priceless

Total: $70K

I am always amused when I see premium reproductions today with asking prices of $90 - $120K. But then hey, with some of the characters on this forum, you can always call them "celebrity owned"! :D :D

Just a couple of years ago this same $70K would buy you a nice ERA. An ERA is still a fantastic car, but it is not an aluminum Kirkham IMHO.
