best oil for 392 roller engine
I have a crate 392 ford racing engine (with roller cam) what oil do you think is best? I have a oil cooler and the car will be driven in a variety of temps. I was thinking 10-30?? Is there anything thats best for a roller cam engine? Oil temp is pretty low with that oil cooler. Thanks for yout tips!

I think 10W-30 would be fine...that's what I run in my 425ci stroker...just be sure to give it plenty of time to break in before you go to a synthetic oil.

I have heard not to use synthetic until I get about 5000 miles on it. Whats everyone use when they go to synthetic, Mobil1????

bullseye..i have a ford racing svo crate 392 stroker and ford racing told me to use 20w50 which i have done. i disconnected my oil cooler as oil temps ran too cool when outside air/ambient temps were below 55 degrees F. bill

so 20W50 is the best viscosity for a roller cam 392 ford motor?
Any brand better than the other (talking about non synthetic for first 5000 miles) Any suggestions?

I have an Olthoff Racing installed 392 crate. They recommend 20w/50. That's what I've used for 21,000 trouble free, hard charging miles. I usually use Pennzoil - no particular reason. I don't run synthetic but do change the oil and filter every 1500 to 2000 miles.

If you read Jack Roush's web site for his crate motors, he says he wants 3000 miles of break-in before switching to synthetic oil. I think I will follow his advice and do that.

Use the lightest oil you can while still maintaining the pressure you need! Heavier oil may go from the pump to the oil pan via the pressure relief valve. Asking 20W-50 paraffin to go through the filter, the yards of plumbing and the oil cooler at 40 degrees is asking a lot. If you can use 5W-30 and still get the pressure you need, use it. If engines also had flow gauges (in addition to pressure gauges) many drivers would use thinner oil. You can't go wrong with Mobil1.

Ok....10-30 for now and after break in I will use Mobil1. I looked at Roush's site and he did say use 10-30 non syntheitc for 1st 3K miles. I will use Mobil1 after that. I have read on a few sites that some people have had problems with synthetic will roller lifters...they said instead of the roller bearing rolling over the lobe it was sliding due to very low friction. Is that just hype or has anyone had a roller lifter fail with synthetic oil??

yes, I have the roller that comes from Ford in their SVO Crate 392.
