What's the average price of .....
A Cobra driveshaft? I'm approaching the point in time where I'm gonna need one...what's the going rate? I have a driveshaft out of my dad's 97 Cobra that I can use...he replaced it with an aluminum one. It should have the right spline tranny yoke for my Toploader...just needs to be cut down and have an end welded on it. Any ideas?

I don't know if I'd go for cutting up a driveshaft. After all the money and time I put into my build I went with a Denny's Driveshaft. Came with all the parts needed and a superb job.

I had mine made for about $250.00, aluminum, balanced. Works great. I agree with Roscoe, after putting all the money into her. why take a short cut and risk it. Stuart |
I just think that's ridiculously high for a driveshaft 10" long...you can buy a brand new aluminum driveshaft for a Mustang for $179.00....and the thing's 4-5' long....

The length actually has very little to do with the cost since most of the cost is for the yokes, u-joints, welding, and balancing. The length is really just the cost of the pipe, which is usually pretty cheap.

I had a custom shaft made for my truck last year and it was $195 using my yoke but all new parts otherwise.

I had a custom driveshaft to go from the Mopar tranny to the Ford 9". It was about 160-175 if I recall correctly. Includes the price of the front slip joint splined thingie. Done by a place in Dubuque IA, but I don't remember the name.

There are probably driveshaft shops in your area who cut down, balance and modify driveshafts . There is a market out there for such work..check yellow pages. I do not think modifying your Dad's 97 Cobra DS will compromise it in any way. Mine came back from a 91 stock shaft , shortened to 10 3/4", balanced, new joints , yoke, all welds ground smooth and painted black for about $90. Whether you need an aluminum shaft at such short length is a personal preference.

...had a few shortened drive shafts done over the years - no problem. They always looked and performed like a new unit. I suppose it is all in the skill of the shop that does it.

Denny made mine for about 185.00 which included the universal joint and harware and the tranny spline shaft.

The next time you are in Louisville stop by Republic desiel dowtown on college street. They built mine I supplied the yokes cost was around $225. They stand behind what they make and know of several companies that use them. I told them to make sure they made it out of the strongest stuff they can. Happy New Year. I can't recall what I paid. I do know it is only 6" long. The engine
placement is set back 10" from the norm. And I remember not paying attention to detail and spilled the needle bearings all over the floor. Your town probably has a few places that will cut to fit a drive shaft for you. I think I ended up with about 3/4 of an inch of yoke travel. That might not be the optimum slack but that is what I ended up with. |
I am not sure alum is worth the extra cost since the weight diff is nill on such a short shaft,and steel does a much better job of dynamic balancing,I do like the cool factor of aluminum however.
I agree with not short cutting,but when your talking about a piece of tubing with a yoke tapped in each end ,then welded ,it dosent take a high end custom fab shop to do that,any good machine shop can do it,I have done several myself with good luck in highly abusive applications {dirt cars},the only way it can be unbalanced is the weld being inconsistant,since the tubing and yokes are 0 balanced already. The odds of breaking a u bolt,or joint are much greater than twisting a drive shaft. Hapy New Year,,Tim K |
