jack pads
another question from the tyro,
just got jack pads from finish line and remember recently reading a thread concerning the proper position for the jack pads. as i recall the bolts are supposed to be out. i couldn't remember so started reviewing pictures and by gosh, there are as many bolt in applications as there are bolt out. which is correct? i assume the larger jack pads go on the rear of the car, is that correct? i had a hard time distinquishing from pictures which end had the larger jack pads. thanks in advance for your help. still shooting rivits and bending aluminum, i don't think i'll ever get finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!! outlaw  |
I know the long ones go in the front.

Shame on you Paula!
But seriously, the larger jacks do go in the front and as you I did the same search trying to determine which way the bolts went (heads out or threads out). Right or wrong I put mine heads out. Clois |
FWIW, mine are "innies" (bolt heads on the inside).:D
|
thanks paula and clois,
i got it on the large pads in the front, thanks to you, but the 2nd question is .... do the jack pad bolts (with heads out) go outboard of the jack pads, which make the jackpad jacking surface inboard, facing each other, or do the jackpads face outboard, placing the bolt heads inboard. heck ...i think i've asked what i'm trying to ask!! again, thanks for all assistance!!!! outlaw |
All of the pro restored original cars I have seen had the jack pads mounted with the bolts on the outside and the bolt heads showing. Don't know if that is correct but that is what I have noticed.

Bolts out.
Thats how mine are and all other CSX's I've seen. |
To stir the pot, just wanted to let you know I saw an original in 1965 with the fronts one way and the rear reversed. Go figure.
Bottom line: Install them whichever way turns your crank.:3DSMILE: |
Despite what Real 1 says every Cobra book I have seen shows the cars that are racing with the jacks both in and out--long ones in front.
In one of my books thers is a pic of a 289, close-up, coming out of a corner--1 jack is in , 1 jack is out. |
i think i'll go with bolts out, head showing, large in the front. if not for this site, i would have surely screwed them up/
thanks guys and ladies............... outlaw |
Assembly line photos of the first comp cars to come off the line at AC indicate clearly that the bolts were out.
Also, I believe that the proper fasteners showing were metal lock nuts, (Whitworth), not hex bolt heads or acorn nuts. Bud:JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE |
Another thing to consider is construction. Original jack pads were two piece, welded units from steel plate. And they weren't chrome or polished stainless, but painted black. Might as well as make it really complicated!**)

Went home for lunch and looked at my chrome front jacks. The bolts are on the inside for a very good reason.....the flanges on the jacks are so thick that they would hit the body work if I moved them to the other side (bolts out)!!! Yup! Perhaps the chrome jacks on my SPF are aftermarket units and are thicker steel? Again, there is no way I could reverse them so the bolts are on the outside. LOL |
