CHP and vin verifacation
I had my Vin tag installed today. I went to Dublin CHP and the whole process only took 15 min.!
The Guy was great. I got a little nervous when he came out with a Dewalt drill and a hammer but he did well. Now I need some advice on where to go for a smog check, a bond and a brake and light inspection. I am in Danville. |
Mike,
I think the smog check has to be done at a special place designated by the BAR and a BAR supervisor has to be present. You can't take it to just any old smog station. When I called the BAR they set my appointment up at the auto shop at Los Positas college in Livermore. Call the BAR at 800-622-7733. They'll tell you where to go based on your zip code and they'll set the appointment up for you. Can't help you with the bond and brake/light inspection but you might ask others here on CC to see if you'll need to have emergency flashers and a backup light installed. So, I guess you got your rearend back together and everything is running well? Chris |
Mike,
Where did the CHP Officer intall the VIN tag? Shin |
Shin,
On the front passenger shock tower. Chris, I will call the bar and request for Las Positas collage Did you have a good experience there? |
Chris,
Yes I rebuilt the rear and I also upgrade to the (i can't remember the spline count) 20 spline? axles. All seems to be good . It was a pretty big job. |
Mike,
I also got my tag today in San Diego. It took about an hour, but was pretty painless. They put it on with tape and were afraid to drill the fiberglass. Apparently they cracked another replica recently. On form 124, my car is now registered with the CHP as a 2004. Is your year model also 2004? I can't help you with a location for brake and light inspection, but in San Diego they are doing it at the BAR smog test location. I just called 800-622-7733 to set the appointment today. I could have gotten in as early as this Friday, but I gotta work! Let me know if BAR does your brake and lights too. |
Mike, I have State Farm insurance and was able to get the Bond through my agent at a rate of 1% of the value. As for the brake lamp inspection I'm going to a place in Vacaville tomorrow called Motoring Specialists (707/448-3322), I got this name from a local on line club member, said they new there business.

Mike,
No bad experience at the jc so I'v been told. Everyone from BACC goes or are going to Las Positas. Breakfast is a good way to find all this out:D Take some time off and come out soon. Glade to hear everything is going well for you. curtis |
Mike,
No problems at Los Positas. Everything went smoothly. Just make sure you tell them you want everything based on a 1965 model year. Chris |
Curtis... Too COLD!!!!:D

I wound up going to the Contra Costa College in San Pablo 2 weeks ago. Real good guys. No hassles. They had to put sniffers up the pipes and run it like a normal check, for registration sake. My 418 registered 4271 grams of unburned HC at idle and 108 at 2500 rpm. Passed with flying colors at 2500 rpm. But was termed a gross polluter at idle. Hmmm...rumpity, rumpity, rumpity. The car reaaly attracts the attention of the local students. Got an exemption sticker and off I went in 30 minutes.
CHP was way cool when I went to the Dublin shop too. They nailed the VIN plate to my front cross member on the passenger side. I too was very nervous when I saw the drill, punch and hammer come out. 'Did a good though. |
vin tag
SkipB
Fiberglass? My are on the front cross member in the engine compartment and one under the dash (I have an FFR). I don't think fiberglass would be permanent enough? johnBgood |
Mike, Did the brake lamp today at the place I gave you the phone # for. In and out in about 1hr, they know the cars and I had No worries. Oh I had a license plate bulb out and Napa Auto parts is less than 1 block away.

Earthquakes????
Hey Guys,
I heard on the TV News last night that there have been a bunch of 3.x earthquakes near Los Positas CC.... After reading this thread, it's clear to me that these are not earthquakes, but a regular parade of Cobras going the BAR :D Have Fun, Randy R... |
johnbb,
I was also surprised they put the tag on the fibreglass. Part of the reason is that Backdrafts come with a vin # on a riveted plate under the hood. They were able to use this as my vin # even though it has two more digits than we use in the US. They also found it stamped on the frame in front of the engine. I had not seen this before the CHP found it. So, apparently that was enough for them, and they put their sticker on the inside of the door jamb. |
I made an appointment with the Smog people today, (she asked for my sequence # and that was it)! She said I could come in tommorrow! I have to work so I told her next friday, this will give me an excuse to take the day off! I will let you know...
I still need help with the bond and the brake & light inspection. I am looking for someone local to danville. |
I had my BAR check done at Los Positas CC auto shop. The kids were more interested in looking at the car and asking about it, the instructor knew exactly what needed to be done. Fast and painless. I let one of the kids start the car and run it during the test, think I made his day.

Tinker,
Who did your brake & light inspection? |
