Karl,
That is kind a my point too. Auctions go to great exteremes to bring in the right buyers. That makes or breaks the auction.

Believe it or not, I will get my transportaion and hotels, and all travel expenses paid by many auctions I elect to attend. Gifts, transportation assistance, meals you name it.
The reason is, if I am there or someone like me is there we make a lot of difference. It is not the cars I bought it is those I bid on and backed of and allowed someone else to pay "too much" is what makes the auction.
If I end up buying 25-40 cars at an auction, I probably bid on 100 or more. besised paying "too much" on those I bought, I oprobably help raise their take $150,00 or more on those I didn't even buy. All this on cars selling $15,000 to $25,000 range.

All of the above is to establish a price "TODAY" on the sale day. They could care less, for the short or the long term volatility of anything.

Down deep inside they probably hope the guy who paid $400,000 kicks himself and takes it back to sell it. Hoping to get $400,000 or more.

If the person bidding against him does not show up, he is liable to get no more than $200,000. If THAT.

So what did the auction do? They help establish the value TODAY. That is the price. Period.

B.J does a hell of a job of promoting their event. To get it televised and have people talk about it, and get all this publicity is what makes it what it is..

I really don't get it. The GT350 SR shown at SEMA, had a sticker around 95K.

LURK 01-25-2004 03:42 PM

I put up a page with auction results for dudes like me who didn't have Speed channel over at:

The only "Bad economy" nonsense is in the make believe heads of those democrats who think they may have a chance in 2004.

DAVID GAGNARD 01-25-2004 04:36 PM

Looking over the B-J website, they say there is an 8% commision on every sale paid by the buyer.... On another page they also state the commision is more for a reserve car over a non-reserve car....Do not say how much though....

They also state that they have found that non-reserve cars generally bring more than reserve cars......

I think this B-J auction always brings more than most other auctions,if nothing more than the prestige of it.....Heard some of the "perks" that some of the "invitation" bidders get too from some of the comentaters, they take care of those guys and gals that they know are big (ego) bidders with the cash.....I would do the same in their shoes too....

Turk,
This sounds like the prime opportunity to sell/auction your pristine 1985 Eurospec'd 930 Turbo. Who knows, it could be the desired marque for upcoming BJ or Kruse auctions.

If someone knocks at my door with $134k for my CSX, I'd take them to dinner too!;)

Gordon Claunch 01-25-2004 05:25 PM

Lets have an auction right here!!! We will use my car, It is an original Shelby Cobra manufactured by me using original B&B parts:3DSMILE: we will start the bidding at $35,000.00
gimme 40 40 40 40 ??? well cmon guys there is no fee even!!

Gordon Claunch 01-25-2004 05:27 PM

Hey guys???? hey is thing on????%/

Wahoo 01-25-2004 05:49 PM

just got back

Well,
It was nuts as usual. My second time out. As far as the princely sum for the fastback...who cares!?!? Its the fn' founder of Gateway computers. He could have bought the whole damn auction. Semko-my understanding of Eurospec'd Porsche's is small but from what I've gleaned from SCM, they don't sell much better than the U.S. counterparts.

Thoughts on the auction. Saturday night is about cash and flash. Its not a night or time for pretenders or those without extraordinary means to blow a wad. Obviously the 400k Zephyr was an ego thing. Such is the thing of auctions. Saturday night was a blast and the run-up to the evening was set by some crazy purchases in the early afternoon. One of the cars that inflated prices early was the COPO camaro. :D But hey, a GTO with a nice paint job and non-factory options the night before went for a staggering 71k. Emotions run high and ppl. decide they HAVE to have it.
Case in point regarding my experience with a bidder...
I ran into a young guy in the airport that bought a Gullwing and a Maserati racecar from RM and then the blue Shelby continuation (which he overpaid) for his 'family's collection' The standard obnoxious 'I paid xxxx and it was SUCH a deal!' He bid 135 on a continuation 4000 series with an engine that was not provided by SAI., there was no CSX no. (I assume because it wasn't turn key) which nets for 145.8 after commission and around another grand for transport. Obviously if you're a saavy buyer and know what you want, you can get it from other means. I figured I'd write my little piece b/c true to form, many here were bound to whine about the prices paid. I understand the frustration...hell, I don't even own a Cobra but it is what it is. Saturday night got so out of whack people even quit making noise about 200k bids. It just became a number on the screen. I'm just glad I had a good seat :D I just wish the weather would have cooperated.

A gold 68 Shelby, factory air, auto, convertible went for a princely sum (I think 80 something) and it needed A LOT of work. Seller 'claimed' restored but what a load of crock. buyer beware. the engine bay was a mess and had not even been detailed. dirt and grime was all over the place but it sold because of the old man and he was at the auction.

I went by SAI and they were very pleasant but when I asked about coil overs in the 289 I received the standard, "We're not replicas, we keep to what was historically correct' or some such thing. Overall, they were nice and provided answers. I think their lead time quotes were a little misleading but I don't have to worry as I'm not in the 'pre-ordering' position :D They did have out the polished car for photo ops and really let the car rip quite a bit. I was told it took 480 hours to polish---one more reason not to have a polished body, IMHO. The Eleanor car was and continues to rival the Cobra for me. It just speaks to me. The 289 looked killer with the white (rookie?) stripe. They quoted me 85k for it (i suppose with a glass body) and a new 302.

Anyway, BJackson didn't disappoint in terms of sheer audacity and excitement and I hate to say it but if you have a nice Bel Air, Yenko, 427/435 vette (all GM, I know %/ :D ) or some sort of documented Hemi then you're in better shape then ever. I'm anxious to see the remaining numbers on some Shelby's that were to be auctioned late tonight. A blue 67? KR I believe and a white 68 could be had for a good price as both needed a good bit of work. A perfect car for someone wanting a project in my mind.

I was impressed with the SoCal speed shop's little deuce and was sent reeling when told that their rods start at 125. I need a new career before I can begin my high octane dreams anyway. For now, I'll just continue to lurk here and live vicariously.

cheers

Dave:

I believe that 15% is the rate for reserve cars. I had a gentleman call me who had been contacted by BJ to sell his original CSX. That is the number he quoted to me.

Jamo 01-26-2004 11:04 AM

Wahoo

Many thanks...good observations on your part.;)

PatBuckley 01-26-2004 04:44 PM

It only took me 470 hours.

casaleenie 01-26-2004 04:55 PM

What's paid on a reserve car that makes the block but doesn't sell? Anything?

Dan Semko 01-26-2004 06:20 PM

The consignment fee! Not bad for an average 8 minute turn over.

Jim Maxwell 01-26-2004 07:04 PM

anyone know what the 1968 500KR went for that was listed for the auction? Not the convertible. Thanks!

Wahoo 01-26-2004 09:37 PM

blue KR

Computer,
I was in love with that car. It needed a little TLC but I had visions of my own personal eleanor. Was this your car? The price seemed a little steep for the condition it was in, but hey, if it was your car, congratulations.:D I had it pegged for upper 40s (my swag was obviously off). I love that blue and the KR kicks ass in my book.

regards

computerworks 01-26-2004 09:41 PM

Wah..

no, not my car; pic is from Barrett catalog.

The interior was a bit rough. I think the price was fair, given the rest of the field.

Excaliber 01-26-2004 09:46 PM

,,,,so the 63 split window will be gold someday......

Maybe I better go take a look at that car after all.

Ernie
