I'm going to win this year's engine master challenge

I just thought you should know. :3DSMILE:

You can win too! Put down that can of wax and apply. This year is the return of the pump gas small-block. Up to 410ci.

Engine Masters Challenge 2004

Why go for 600 when you can go for 7. Here is the mill.

Hey Budman!

How is the aluminum beast?! I actually don't have the JBL...its at HOC, all shined up, and looking for a new owner. I'm just a builder at heart and I seem to have fallen in love with engine building during the cobra adventure. :)

Andy:

The beast is fine....lots of fun. Did some carb rejetting this afternoon, and it is running fantastic.

Good to hear from you! Any new auto projects on the horizon?

Jim

Andy, even your cyber-runs are fun to read (from the link):

Cylinder Heads: Heads That Flow So Well They Give Me A Stiffy
Camshaft: you would pee your panties if I told u

750hp 01-26-2004 04:32 AM

6.544" rod length  That's, ummm.... LONG !!!!! 11.75:1 comp is up there for pump gas - must be some pretty serious duration on the camshaft to bleed off a little cylinder pressure...

You're selling your car?!? How can you put a dollar value on one of the most (in)famous Cobra builds ever posted on the internet???

Good luck with the Engine Masters challenge. I'd love to get one of my engine building friends to ship a motor over. He's a Cleveland engine freak. 700+hp on pump gas is an everyday feat for him, but it's certainly higher than the 6500rpm limit of the clhallenge.....

mattr762 01-26-2004 08:52 AM

Your 700hp peaks at 7000RPM and your dyno plot goes past 11,000. When is your red line?

Andy Dunn 01-26-2004 10:24 AM

750!! :) Hmmm. I didn't pick that rod length, the program choose it for me but I'll use whatever rod is recommended by scat in their 408 stroker kit. Its easy to build 700 on pump gas...its an entirely different challenge to build it before 6500 rpm ;) The contest is not peak...the contest is an average of the area under the curve from 2500 through 6500, taken at 500rpm intervals, for both HP and TQ. The winning engine historically has been like a 450 + 450 average. This can be calculated in Superflow dyno software under the File > Test area and looks like this. http://www.cobralads.com/archives/masters1.jpg That would be a 903.8 score. If your friend can do it, he should since its $100k for first. Easy money? :3DSMILE: Also, no race heads or race headers. The engine I have there is theoretically a 1000 point small block. No small block has crossed 1000 yet. I'm hoping that this engine can do it. If you don't run close to 12:1, you aren't going to win. In '02 there were some 14:1 engines and even a sick 16:1. I'll take the trade off of lowering total timing for increased power. Its a tradeoff that must be made to win.

Matt! :) I follow the words of Carroll Smith on redline and would place it at 300 past peak or 7,300. The cam would be rated for float well past that so I'm comfortable with it...but really this is a purpose built engine for the competition and will not see anything over 6800 when they test.

Here are the rules if anyone is interested.

Hey Andy,

Glad to see you and your sense of humor are back

Good luck in the engine masters challenge !

When is the dyno-off date?

Regards,

Tom

Andy,

My Scat 408 kit came with 6.200" rods.

Pete

Andy Dunn 01-26-2004 12:07 PM

Thanks Pete, I have added the 6.2" rod length to the file. Thanks for the kind words Tom. The event is in september I believe. The first step is to be invited to compete. They accept 50 participants. I expect they'll receive 80-100 applications this year.
