SB100 - "YR MODEL" - what did you use?
I have my SB-100 - one of those crazy January 2nd guys. They left blank "YR-MODEL". I have seen a lot of posts that indicated that other owners year was "0000" when they went through SB-100/registered their car.
I didn't think I cared until I contacted my insurance agent (AAA) who indicated that if the car was registered as a 2003 (Year First Sold) the premium would be 50% more than if it were registered as a 1965. I have to go to DMV tomorrow to get a Form 124 (to request the CHP to inspect my car) and I thought I would ask them to record it as a 1965, if that is even possible. What is your experience? I was at DMV yesterday getting my own tags, as the car has not been driven for several years. I inquired about the possibility of changing my existing registration status to be included SB-100. The woman I spoke to stated that in my particular situation there would be no real advantage. She also said the SB-100's would be exempt from smog too and would show "0000" as year model. This was based on her experience.

I would have the discussion with your insurance comp to insure it for "actual value". That way you won't get caught short if something should happen. FYI-- I went through SB100 2 years ago, and my car, for registration purposes, came out as a 2002. But for SMOG purposes, the sticker that the BAR put inside you engine compartment, a 1965. |
I got my CHP blessing about a week ago on my SB100 Backdraft. They put 2004 on it as they consider only the year it is originally registered. I have an appointment at the BAR tomorrow for smog check. I will have them use the bodystyle (1965) for smog purposes. This is your choice!
As for insurance, I also have AAA and they sent me to an affiliate called American Hobbyist Insurance (800-395-4835) Only $271.00 for this year at an agreed value. Simple and they honor any discounts AAA offers for having all your insurance with them. Just ask for forms, take some pictures, send in your check and your are done! |
I registered mine this year and they used the year on my Certificate of Origin ... 2003

Sounds like I am S.O.L. to get a 1965 year on the registration - I was only really concerned regarding the insurance. I knew the deal with the BAR and body year.
SkipB - I will call them Friday - thanks for the idea. Did you have any limits on mileage or where you could drive. Condon and Skelly said I could only go to club meets, car shows and the like. I could not go to the grocery store or a friend's house unless I was going to a permitted event. Huh? CS |
Curious ... if you don't mind sharing... what was the rate AAA quoted? I have AAA for my other cars and have not got any quotes yet for the Cobra.

told you so... this thing is a nightmare for many reasons. my title reads the same thing as do all the others. my smog referee lost his mind when printing my vehicles label. it identifies the engine as a 1960 7 litre FERRARI... Despite there being a BAR lable from the 80's on the car saying it is a 1966 427.
I'm waiting for the call from Maranello telling me I will be sued for putting their engine in a kit car, worse yet a Cobra. |
I believe DMV will use the year you paid your fees, I started my paperwork in December and just finished last week. My registration year is 2003.

American Hobbyist Insurance limits your miles. You chose the mileage. (I choose 2000 per year, but can change it) They won't allow it as a daily driver, commercial uses, etc., but will allow you to go to club/hobby activities and occasional pleasure drives. That covers store runs and going to your friends house, unless they aren't pleasurable! Ha! Liability max is 100K, 300K. I carry an umbrella policy also, which should help if necessary. I did not get a quote from AAA directly as they seemed hesistant to offer insurance and were quick to send me to American Hobbyist. AAA even has a brochure (part#74245) that is titled Collector Vehicle Insurance. It directs you to the American Hobbyist phone number. The coverage looks pretty OK to me. They insist you garage your vehicle, have at least 10 years driving experience, and have at least one "regular" vehicle for every licensed driver in the household. Also offered is Inflation Guard +2% each quarter, spare parts coverage up to $500, and automatic 30 day coverage if you add another car to your collection. Jeez, I sound like a commercial! Oh, I found another #, it is 800-396-3792 for a quote. I hope this helps!? I also got my "smog test" today. They insisted on calling my 351w a 1969 block even though it is new. OK by me. BAR guys were great. They were very careful with my car, and even wiped off fingerprints. Now one to brake and light inspection. Does anyone know if this is still necessary? |

Today I got my form 124 to authorize the CHP to provide a VIN - no problem other than typical DMV lines. Now I just need the car delivered so I can take it over to CHP - it should arrive sometime in late February. I pushed the women at DMV regarding the YR MODEL - she said all recent SPCN will have the 0000 model year. As Randy said, it is what it is. I will probably just go adding the Cobra to my existing AAA policy. While it will be my third car, I will only have one other with them and thus any savings by going with a non-AAA provider will be lost by not having a multi-car discount. With AAA I get a little more liability coverage (I won't have to adjust my umbrella) and they are a local company, not someone 3,000 miles away. I also don't want to worry about whether my destination is permitted under the policy. Condon & Skelly and Grundy limit where you can drive - it must be a Hobby location such as club meetings, etc. I was told you could not go to the grocery store or a friend's house. While I doubt they police this too carefully, why risk having a claim rejected? I am just trying to KISS and I can always change things in the future. "0000" has been the *YR-MODEL for SPCNS cars for several years prior to SB100 coming out. No change with SB100...
However, I'm still not clear about some of the early language in SB100/SB1578 development that stated you had at least one choice to register the car as the year it accurately resembles or replicates... what happened or changed with this option, and when? Has anyone succeeded at this, or looked into this thoroughly during this new process? I believe the Bill language & codes were posted right here on ClubCobra by a member a year ago or so... ???? |
Are the smog restrictions different different for a 1965, versus a 1966 specialty vehicle in CA? The reason why I ask, the BAR guy said he was going to put it down as a 1965, but I asked him to put it down as a '66. Hopefully this doesn't effect anything.

In Calif. there were no emission requirements at all in Calif and no smog equipment. That started in 1966. But if you have your car registered under SB-100 with a SPCNS number then you don't have to worry as that exempts it from any emission testing. The only thing that could even be remotely called emission equipment on 1965 and prior cars was a PCV valve. Some 1966 cars went to smog pumps and others used various means to meet the requirements as at that time they were different for different motors and not all this every motor meets the same crap. If you read the wording in "S.B. 100", they refer to a 1965 typically. Most will tell you not to test what works by changing the year, but if you feel this guy at the bar will let you by with a '66, maybe so. You will want to register it by body style, not the engine.
