how many replicas have been made?
Does anyone have any idea just how many replicas have been built? I dont mean how many companys have built replicas, but the total number of all the manufactures combined. I would think that if someone had production totals from each of the major replicas a ball park figure could be established. Does anyone have a clue??? Just a curiousty I had.

I believe the figure is 40,000. I think that Curt Scott uses this figure in his latest Cobra reproduction guide. Considering that there were fewer than 400 originals, 99% of the rolling cars are repros.

40,000 huh. I had no idea. Its amazing there are 39,999 other idiots like me willing to spend almost money as my home cost on a go cart with no top. I fell a little better now.

How many do you think will be left if and when Shelby delivers cheaper priced cars either from South Africa or wherever else they make the deal and Kirkham keeps a sharp pencil on the aluminum story?

Unfortunately Steve is probably right. Seems like most of todays replica buyers want a Cobra almost exactly like the cars produced in the sixties. Guys keep selling less than perfect replicas and upgrading to a more correct model and some are still not satisfied until they're is a Shelby nameplate attached.
I wonder what happens to all those lesser replicas? Then you have a large contingent of FFR buyers who just want to race their replicas and don't much care about correctness. Isn't it strange that this large group of replica owners with their own web site can play together much nicer than the guys with the "better" replicas? Cranky |

If Shelby has sold about 400-500 replicas to date, (from a previous post regarding late delivery of the SA Shelby's), and we have about 40,000 out there... how can your claim stand up? "Seems like most of todays replica buyers want a Cobra almost exactly like the cars produced in the sixties. I was actully replying to Steve's claim about the lesser Cobras disappearing. Tell me there are not a lot of guys trading up when they have perfectly good replicas but not perfect. I read it here and no other place. And don't tell me you gonna trade in the Kirkham for a Shelby. And yes, not as much infighting on the FFR forum |

Everything has its price
As many of you have seen that an inexpensive project almost always goes way over budget and then you get to the dollar territory that can either have a Shelby tag or a Kirkham, the choice seems clear to me.
Forget the resale. Forget the detail. Forget the snob appeal. At the end of the day, I bet most would equal trade their XYZ Cobra for a Shelby or Kirkham and not look back. I remember back in 1966 when the Addidas sneakers got popular. They were white leather with Black stripes and a lot of cash for a growing kid that was going to grow out of them in a season or so. My parents only got me the inexpensive vinyl ones. I always envied the kids that had the real ones. I knew the difference but only had the ability to have the practical copy. -Today I have the leather ones. If they were the same price in 1966 you can be sure I would have had the Addidas. All am I saying that if the money is equal or really close at the end of the day, the other multitudes of Cobra Replica manufacturers will begin to lose market share. |
Steve, \I do agree with you that anybody looking for a first Cobra might just as well go for the Kirkham and be done with it.
A lot of us started way before Kirkham and Shelby were in the replica business and our only options for a high end Cobra were ERA and Contemporary. So now I have spent enough on my car to buy a Kirkham and a 1/2 so what so I do? Dump the Contemporary and give all my hard work to some newbie for 1/3 of what it cost me? Not me, I did all the work and im gonna trade it in for some newer replica? If I am gonna blow any more dough on a Shelby it's gonna have a CSX2000 or 3000 number. What ever would us Marketeers do without branding ?
Brands are promoted to be aspirational, and part of the cache is the fact that the biggest brands ( such as Shelby) cost more to purchase than the lesser brands despite the fact that the production costs are much the same. Ask yourself why people pay so much for Adidas and Nike trainers when they only cost less than $4 to make per pair. Take that $4 off what you pay and behold you have the brand premium ? The high brand premium becomes a major part of the market positioning and brand owners guard these positions as a matter of life and death. Now what happens when a strong market leader reduces the prices he charges? The perception of the brand suffers as customers ask themselves if the previous brand premium they were happy to pay to reinforce their aspirational purchase decision was really worth it ? For those like yourself that already went the best route at the time you did it, I am not suggesting that you take a hit a buy a Kirkham or Shelby. I just think for the new buyer, there is a clear path to go depending on your allowance money.
