Turn Signal Switch
Where do these usually go? Are they flanged and go between the hub (boss adapter) and the steering wheel....or do they go under the hub?

For instance...this is the turn signal from Finish Line. (Picture taken from their website.)
The description says that it bolts in front of the hub....but the top of the turn signal is not flanged....so where would the steering wheel bolt? |
Or is the view in the picture aimed at the rear of the unit.....and the flange at the front?
|
Blykins:
I believe when they say "in front of the hub", they mean forward or before the hub. In other words, take off the hub, slide the turn sig sw assy on the steering column, then put the hub and wheel on. Ted R. |
OK....another question....if it's flanged and bolts to the hub....what keeps it from rotating when you turn the steering wheel/hub?
|
The Switch assy itself should not bolt to the hub, but to the
steering column. If its a self-canceling turn signal, a canceling device would bolt to the hub. Not having the device in my hands I cant say exactly how this switch is set-up, but the picture you posted looks like an early VW unit, which I believe is what was used on the original Cobras. It may or may not be the correct one to use on your Shell Valley, it all depends on what steering column you're using. Call Enzo at Finish Line. He can tell you if the switch he sells will fit the column in your car. Good Hunting !! Ted R. |
I rarely use the Shell Valley stuff. It's not too original looking. They specify a wood rim steering wheel....but it has some huge dish in it.....I think like 3.5" or something. I'll figure something out. It's just hard to plan without knowing exactly how each part works....you know?

The picture does appear to be a VW unit- sixties vintage and would be "correct" to original.
There are one or more set screws to hold the unit to the column if I remember right. It's been 10 years since I put mine in. Think bare column with shaft protruding. The assembly goes on at that point. To be vintage correct, the lever goes on the right hand side of the column. Remember the cars were "converted from right hand drive. The turn signal lever did not get switched to the American position. I would only be guessing to say it would fit your column. It was installed under a MotoLita hub and steering wheel. I believe these can be had from Finishline. If you wish to use the "gennie" stuff, it is probable that the steering shaft you have will not have the correct spline for the MotoLita hub and may need to be re-splined or replaced. There are no adapters for this that I know of. The wheel you describe is definitely not as original, which is 16", wood rimmed and of the "split ring" design. Shelby had them done with nine rivets holding the wood in place. AC installed them at the factory. I guess he wanted to be distinctive for some reason. Again, I'm sure the wheel and hub are available from Finishline. Check my gallery. I think you might just barely make out the turn signal lever. The wheel you see is the correct Motolita piece and the silver Cobra center is also correct for an S/C. If you do go with the "gennie" set up, you will find that the center cap may seem a little loose. All they have to hold them in place is a rubber o-ring. I had no problems with mine. Hope some of this helps. Al |
Like ASnake say's
That is a VW switch and mounts with 1 grub screw. Check any Bug from 62 to 67. I used the VW tube and shaft with an adaptor in my Contemporary also. Use an extra bearing at the bottom of the tube to support the shaft. Don't forget the cancel ring. |
Thanks guys. I ordered a turn signal switch...I'll just have to see what I can come up with. I may have to watch an episode of American Chopper and get stoked on some fabricating. :)

blykins,
We use this unit on our 427 Comp and FIA289 Comp cars. Send me an eMail and I'll sent you the assy. page of our manual. grumpy |
Hey Grump....
Thanks for the offer....I went ahead and ordered a Shell Valley turn signal switch....probably exactly the same, but it's made to fit the aluminum steering column that comes with the kit. If I can't figure out, I'll give you an email. Thanks again....appreciate the help. Brent |

What do you have left? Sounds like you're getting pretty close. |
Oh, I'm far from close. I need the whole front suspension...wheels & tires...rollbar....sidepipes....windshield....stup id trim stuff like mirrors, lights, etc.....and the shifter. Oh, and don't forget paint. According to my little handy dandy Excel spreadsheet, I'm about 65% finished...financially. Paint's a big $ item though....and so are wheels and tires.

brent,
be advise, if you use the SV turn signal assy, you'll have to use a dished wheel to clear the switch arm. i didn't want a deep dish wheel , but to clear the signal switch, you'll need one. i think the SV wheel is 4.5 inches or something, you don't need that much, but ya gotta have some. outlaw |
I planned for that....I ordered a piece of 1" thick aluminum disc to get the steering wheel even more away from the turn signal. Hopefully it will work. :-) I may have to order another piece....hehehehe

Dependant on whose wheel you end up using, you should be able to track down a pre-made spacer. A while back I read an article where it noted that you can heat-up and bend the turn signal stalk to get more clearance. Looking at my unit, I’m not sure I would risk having it break, but someone else may have been successful in doing so.

If you want to avoid all the monkey motion of spacers and such, check out Russ's switch. Same unit but modified so no dish is necessary. Nice unit.
