side pipe delimma

Hi, I am new to this site and I'm hoping that someone could give me some information about a header side pipe configuration. I work at Coventry Restorations (PA) and we are currently working on a cobra kit car that incurred damage to the drivers side. In the accident both the side pipe and the header were destroyed. The only relevant information I have on the configuration is; the pipes were made by SMC Co (which I understand is out of business), the engine is a 289, the header-to-head flange has ports with the dimensions 1in x 1 5/16, the header does a hard 90 down and shortly there after makes a 45 or so out to the side pipe cutout, the side pipe and header are connected with a square flange in which all of the pipes have a diameter of 1 1/2 inches. We have looked in numerous catalogues and cannot locate an exact match (biggest problem being the square flange). We are looking to purchase both driver side and passenger side configurations. Any enlightenment that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Adam

Adam, do you know what brand Cobra it is? If you could find out, you could just call the manufacturer and get a set.

Blykins is correct. Since the bodies and frames of various replicas are different, one needs to know who manufactured them. Many manufacturers fabricate their own headers, so they are usually the best source.

My Everett-Morrison has the square flange which is connected with 8 bolts (guessing they are 3/8 or 7/16").

EM is currently producing a new version of their car, so I can't qualify whether they have headers/sidepipes in stock for the old version, (assuming that it meets your needs), but they can probably supply you with blueprints or dimensions.

Best bet is to just have a fabricator make up a set...

Dan, even EM has different sets depending on the serial number. I ordered a set from them after giving them my number and they were about 4 inches from hitting the hole on one side and about 3 on the other. After calling them they said from my serial number that was when they were playing with set back distance and without the pipes they didn't really know where the engine was sitting in the frame...

Good to hear from you... as always, feel free to correct me. Of course, you might have had some difficulty with the side pipes because of that chevy-stuff you have under the hood :)

If you know who the car was made by, call them. Otherwise have a set made up.

Dan, just waiting for Crower to make my lifters, then I can concentrate on putting the engine back in the car. Was told 6 weeks for them about the middle of January...so hopefully sometime before the end of the month...or early March will do.
