What's inside my SPF sidepipes?

Fiberglass packing? Steel wool? Perforated steel inserts or cones?

I just want to understand what makes them so quiet when compared to others I've heard.

Hal Copple 02-26-2004 03:36 PM

a perforated steel tube, surrounded by stainless steel "wool".

RedBarchetta 02-26-2004 03:59 PM

Hal, thanks!

Have yours changed "tones" with usage? I figure yours have the most miles on them as anyone here. Reason I ask is that CORSA makes a great exhaust system for Corvettes, and mine did change tone (slightly louder) after about 5,000 miles of use.

Hal Copple 02-26-2004 04:17 PM

oh my yes, as the miles accumulate, my pipes got louder and louder, and even more "melllow" such that my car's sound is about the most intoxicating thing about the whole driving experience.

RedBarchetta 02-26-2004 04:56 PM

Hmmmmm.....anyone out there have an engine test stand that they are performing endurance testing on and want to borrow a set of SPF side pipes for 30 days?!? ;-)

clayfoushee 02-26-2004 08:55 PM

Not SPF, but one of the things I noticed is that my side pipes were noticeably louder after they were ceramic coated for the second time The coating guy said the process would probably blast any glass or wool out of there. He was right.

Hal Copple 02-26-2004 09:29 PM

when my exhaust was ceramic coated, the headers were done inside and out, but the sidepipes only on the outside, i don't know how they could spray the inside of the sidepipes, and i have drilled several small holes in my sidepipes, and the "wool" is still there.

Hal, If you left your Cobra outside last night I would say you got about 12'' of snow in your sidepipes.

Sunny in NJ:3DSMILE:

Hal Copple 02-27-2004 06:28 AM

oh, man, i thought i left this sort of snow back in Kansas!! Have nearly two feet of heavy wet snow on the ground, i just walked around, shot some pics, i couldn't get any car out of the garage if i needed to. Couldn't get to work today, so am just catching up on some chores here, Wife is back in balmy Nebraska right now, so i don't know if my plans for a road trip tomorrow will pan out or not.

Pretty though, Everything is so quiet. If you can catch Speevision-Dream Car Garage this week, one more this weekend, our car is on it, at VIR.

I just walked out and raised the hood, just to make sure the old faithful Beast was still in there.

all the best,

Hey, Hal, if you just still had your buffed-up Talon, you'd be off and away! That's what the Evo's been for here in Cincy, but right now it's looking more Spring-y than there. Be safe.

casaleenie 02-27-2004 07:27 AM

Looks like a good place to ask...

Does anyone have any experience with the Vortex Insert Cones that are listed in the AFCO Racing Products catalog...??
My pipes were ceramic coated also...
Just so damn loud... Need to quiet them down just a little...

Hal Copple 02-27-2004 07:50 AM

Well Doug, funny you should mention my old '90 AWD Eclipse.

soon after moving here from Kansas, i wanted to merge infront of a Northstar Caddy, who disagreed with that, and i could not pull him. So vowing never to let that happen again, i put about 3K worth of upgrades on the car, fuel computers, boost Controller, big ported 16G, full big exhaust, etc. At abut 15 psi, probably about 275-295 hp

Everynow and then i would run up against an STS, and would just love to stomp them. That turbo was a fine, smooth car, with the Eibach suspension. It still runs well up in Canada. It really was a fine road machine.

Just purchased some perforated plate and the engineering shop is about to fold/roll it into a 6" cone for me.

Will insert one in each side.

Stay tuned will let you know the dB result.

Cheers

:MECOOL: Sorry but we are all out cruising in the sun!!!!!

I tried inserting the Vortex cones into the end of the pipe - Made a minute reduction only. These inserts need to go close to the collector I am told.
