429 Oil Pan Recommendations

I'M PICKING UP MY SUPERFORMANCE 1837 IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. I'VE ALREADY GOT A 429 BUT IT WAS DYNO'D WITH A STOCK OIL PAN. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE INFO FROM YOU SPF GUYS WITH 429'S WHICH OIL PAN YOU ARE USING THAT PROVIDES THE GROUND CLEARANCE WE NEED AND GIVES US A GOOD OIL VOLUME. IF YOU HAVE SPECS IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THE 429 IS BORED .80 OVER STROKED TO 4.40 WITH INTAKE MANIFOLD AND C460 HEADS MATCH PORTED AND POLISHED. THE ENGINE IS INTERNALLY BALANCED. CARBURATION IS A HOLLEY DOMINATOR 1150. TOTAL DISPLACEMENT IS 545 CU. IN. STAINLESS VALVES,CROWER RODS,JESEL ROLLER ROCKERS, SOLID LIFTERS,PRETTY WILD CAM WITH A VACUUM PUMP.

429 Oil Pan

I am using a canton racing "T" sump oil pan for my 351w. I did it specifically for ground clearance issues. However, it comes with a windage tray which is a great way to get an extra 10-15hp since it keeps the oil from frothing up around the crankshaft due to the wind generated by the crank as it turns at high RPMS. www.cantonracingproducts.com.

There are also some finned aluminum "Cobra" specific pans out there in a T configuration. I think I prefer steel though since the oil pan is hanging out down there in a pretty vulnerable position.

I am using a Mellinor High Volume pump with this setup. Some would argue the merits of the high volume versus standard volume pumps, but my experience thus far has been positive.

Good luck!

I went with the BBF 9 Qt Canton Marine pan. It is only 7.75" deep
as compared to the 8.5" for the Road Race pan. The pan is basically flat across because there is no front suspension cross member on an SPF to interfere with it. It has a custom center pickup and and 2 interior baffles to keep the oil in the trap. Those boats get hammered all over the place on the water. I have pictures of the pan, the pickup and the windage tray in my gallery at CC. I also have a picture of the road clearance with the engine installed.

I also installed the Canton 3 qt Accusump for extra safety.

Another option that I allways recomend is to use a custom built pan. They don't cost that much more when you really think about it, and you will do away with all the problems and compromises that catalog pans present. Armondo's, Avalon (sp), and Stefs comes to mind but there are others. I am using a custom Stefs pan that is really a Pantera design on my hotrod Cobra.
Armondo's is quite popular on this board. If you choose to go this way I would recomend you put a couple of extra plugs in that pan when it's constructed, for future projects.

You might also check out Aviaid. They have a 10 qt center pickup pan for the SPF. Also Billet Fabrication has a nice aluminum pan.

The aluminum pans look great. The problem is that if you hit a rock or something, they have a tendency to hole. This would be a show-stopper if you where on the road and didn't shut off your engine quickly. The advantage of the the steel pan is that it has a tendency to dent. I know the BBF 9 Qt Canton Marine pan is slightly heavier because the Tech department told me it was 14 gauge metal, which was a bit thicker than the other pans. It never made any sense to me to install a pan that is designed to accomodate a front cross member when there is none in an SPF Cobra.
