So, let me see if I get this... In the thread about "Cobras, not so rare anymore", you describe the "real vs. replica" debate as "mind-numbing" and "silly", then take a slap at drag racers and drifters because they're not "really" racing, but you are...? Oy tink yer all silly... :confused: :LOL: |
I remember tearing out a rear leaf spring on my Dad's 62 Comet doing a 4 wheel drift. That was a pretty good trick with all of 172 cubic inches. I didn't realize I had done it, and the next morning he asked me what I had run over with the car. There it was in the driveway with a decided list to port. I claimed innocence, and he let it pass. Unfortunately the new leaf spring was stronger than the other, so for the rest of the life of the car it had a less pronounced list to starboard.

Um, yes Lowell, I really am, but I haven't a clue what that has to do with this thread. You might reread my post...a bit slower this time. I wasn't taking a slap at drifting, but rather defending it as at least as legitimate as drag racing. Fact is, I think you'll probably hear a lot more about drifting.

comparing drifting to drag racing is absurd.
drifting is like figure skating, subjective judging based on perceived style. a better comparison would be drifting vs. lowrider hopping are there any sanctioning bodies for drifting? what technological advancements have been gleamed from drifting? what indicators of a car's performance are highlighted by drifting? it's a lame spectator sport popularized by wanna-be ricer racers, it will remain at the same level as car stereo contests, low rider hopping contests and anywhere else you find neon lights attached to the underside of a car. |

I thought this all started years ago in Japan when the kids first started using the e-brake in the turns to get the car sideways with a bunch of spectators watching and it kind of evolved from there. And I think a lot of those were front drivers. I remember this from back in the early 90's or so.

The older Toyotas with rear drive are VERY popular and have become quite expensive here now. The SX rear drivers are the MOST popular and command BIG dollars now. Mustangs and Camaros also drift. Heck I was drifting my Excalibur!
Drifting IS well on it's way to become a "sanctioned" event in California. Research and development? I can't think of a better way to determine the strength of "parts" than to go out and thrash the heck out it on PAVEMENT! You gonna need some really STRONG stuff to stay with it. One technique: The Clutch kick. Clutch in, rev the heck out of it, dump the clutch. Ya think that would "test" how good the drive train is? Surprising how many Japanese cars are rear drive, front drivers are very rare in drifting. Of course liberal use of the E brake is common also. With the Cobra? Lots of air pressure, "street" tires a flick of the wheel and mash the gas was all that was needed. Being SHORT WHEEL BASE incredibly HARD to HOLD a Cobra in a nice controlled slide. Rear end WANTS to come around you. It IS a "dance". Drifting aint going away, it's just getting warmed up in the USA. You WILL be hearing more and more about it. OK I get it. Drifting is not "4 wheel drifting", but is "intentionally applied throttle induced oversteer" and reminds me of a typical rallye style driver.
I'm all for it and am going to practice this very thing next time out on a track. Well, maybe not the actual "next" time, but soon. I borrowed a tape of the RUF turbo 911 at the Nurburgring and he is "drifting" quite well. No not as fast as Derek Bell in a 956, but looked like fun to me and I want to try it, mainly to scare the $hit out of my contemporaries with boiling tyres and side window "big-eyes" whilst they may happen to be near me. ( I'm trying to sound British, it's working for some of the other guys..). On second thought,first I may put a mouse in a Budweiser can, and stomp the can into the concrete, as a test of how I might fare if things go awry. |

Road Atlanta is pretty picky as to their rental clientelle, I'd be surprised if Dr. Panoz allowed it, but if he did, I would go. And,
If they let me, I would give it a go in the trusty 'ole 911, as it wants to do this "drifting" from the get-go. |
RA is sponsoring it! A flyer was given to us at last weeks Panoz lapping day along with our schedule. I believe it is also being promoted on their web site!
