CA "specially constructed vehicle" rules
Under the CA rules for a "specially constucted vehicle" do you need to use a pre-1970 engine to get past the CA smog requirements, or can you use a Ford crate engine?

SMOG
Dking. Any engine you want. Any brand. Any size.

You know you'll have to wait until next January.....

DKing,
No problem with a new engine. When you go to register it, ask to go by body style/year, usually 1965 for Cobras. That exempts you right there! Just hope you can get one of 500 SB100 numbers for next year! |
The question really applies when you go to the BAR for the smog test. You'll want to have it tested by body style, not the engine. The Cobra is a 1965 body style and you'll get an emissions exemption. I just got my VIN from the CHP yesterday and my BAR app't is this Friday. If you haven't already done so, log on to the DMV web site www.dmv.ca.gov and follow thru the menu. And camp out at the DMV on Jan 3, 2005. This year the 500 numbers were gone on Feb 27. Last year they were gone in June.

And the year before they were not all used.
I'm in the process of registering mine and went to the referee last week. They didn't ask whether it was going to be smogged by engine type or body style. The referee said it was going to be exempt - sniffed it and recorded as a 1960. Go figure!?! **)**) |
