Need advice on front brakes...
I need a little advice on what to do for my front brakes. I'm at the point where it's time to buy front rotors and calipers...and I don't know what to do.
I'm using a Mustang II front suspension...my choices are: Use a stock Granada 11" rotor and a GM single pot caliper... Use a Wilwood 10.75" rotor and 4 pot calipers... The first is the cheapest of course...with about $230 in cost. The Wilwood kit is pretty trick...comes with aluminum hubs, 10.75" rotors, and 4 piston calipers...all with pads, bearings, races, etc. Price is $519. Do I really need 4-piston calipers? I just have singles on the rear with 11" rotors. (Ford Racing SVO kit). Feel free to let me know if the extra price is worth it.... |
Even if the calipers have 4 pistons, that does not guarantee that they're big enough. I believe that the 10.75" rotors normally come with Dynalites and that series is marginal for the front. Small pad area, narrow rotors...
Your pedal may be slightly firmer with the fixed calipers, but the overall high-speed braking will probably be slightly better with the Granada setup. If you're going to spend money, get 12" rotors and Superlite-series calipers. |
Blykins,
The Wilwoods are more expensive for good reason. They are bullet-proof, designed for racing abuse and very resistant to fading. The hotter they get, the better they grip. If you're just street cruising, you can easily get away with the cheaper option. |
Thanks guys for the advice.

blykins, if you don't have some good master cylinders, you may want to ask about them when you order. You may also need to go larger bore size depending on what you get up front too.

Thanks Brent.....what are you using for brakes? Standard SV setup?
