Need Mustang II Wheel Bearing Help
I've introduced myself to a nice predicament...I'm using a Mustang II front suspension on my SV Cobra. I'm using Mustang II spindles...Granada 11" rotors...I went to Pep Boys to buy the front wheel bearings and seals. Of course I tell them that I need a set of wheel bearings for a 1978 Mustang II. They have to go through all their rigga-ma-roll about what engine size...blah...blah...blah....so they say, "What ring gear size?" Ring gear? I restated that I wanted front bearings....the guy said yeah, apparently, there's a set for 6.75" ring gears, and a set for everything other than 6.75" ring gears. This makes no sense at all to me, so I get the ones for everything but 6.75" ring gears.
I get home and start thinking.....well.....I do have Granada rotors....I wonder if I should have gotten Granada wheel bearings....? So now I have totally confused myself. I'm not for sure what will interchange...but it seems that if you can use the Granada rotors on Mustang II spindles, it should work. To cut to the chase, I have a set of front wheel bearings and seals for a 1978 Mustang II w/ a 302 and a ring gear size other than 6.75. Can anyone reaffirm that this will work? I don't have the rotors or spindles yet....they are ordered but haven't arrived, so I can't check the fitment...I was just trying to get some parts ahead of time. |
I'm 99.9% sure that Mustang II and Granadas use the same front wheel bearings and seals. As for the 6.75 rear gear? I don't think that there was more than one set front wheel bearings for a Mustang II. 10 years ago, a parts man knew what fit and what didn't. Now they only know what the book says, and that's not always right.

Blykins,
I checked into this myself last year and no, the Mustang II bearings will not work as a whole set (both inner and outer). I can't remember off the top of my head but either the inner or outer need to come from the Granada. I also don't remember for sure that the seal from the Mustang will work with the granada rotors. Non-the-less, it's easy to find out when you get the spindles and rotors. John |
I checked on Autozone's website last night.....and did a couple comparisons...There are two ring gears available for the MII...6.75" and 8". They have two separate part numbers for the inner bearing. The outer bearings and seals are the same. I also did a check on the Granada wheel bearings...they have the same part numbers as the 8" MII bearings...so they should work as long as the bearing set is from an MII with an 8" rearend.
I input both cars as 1978 models...both with 302's. I guess it should be fine. I'm glad I bought the bearings for Mustangs other than 6.75" ring gears... |
I am running the same thing you are and just replaced my wheel bearings, I just told the parts man I wanted inner and outer wheel bearings and seals for a 1978 Granada, worked great!!
