a1airboat Darrel I use a 4 lb plastic dead blow hammer. If you hit the rim it doesn't dent it. I of the cobra companys has a socket that goes on the spinner with a breaker bar to remove the wing nuts. DON'T FORGET TO SAFETY WIRE WHEN DONE. Speedway sell a nut for these wheels too like the F1 cars, but you will have to drill the spindle and safety clip it on. Rick Lake

I have purchased two lead hammers from a gentleman on Ebay who's ebay ID is Johnnybaja1000. I haveboth a 5 Lb and and 3 Lb from him. I keep the smaller on in the trunk and the larger one in the shop.

These are great hammers, have a rubber coated handle, and his ebay reputation is 100% perfect. He makes the mallets in 2, 3, 4 and 5 pound and sells a complete set of 4 or individuals.

Check him out... Nice mallets and honest guy.

Here is a link to one of his offerings...

I strongly recommend the solid lead hammers, not the plastic coated dead blow hammers. I can get my knockoffs off much easier with a small lead hammer than with the biggest of my dead blow hammers. No rebound! No lost energy. the ones mentioned above on E-Bay should do it.

Some of the superformance dealers will have hammers, too. They will tell you to put on with a rubber mallet and off with the lead hammer.

Whatever you do, don't buy the same hammer as southernfriedstuckwheel bought.

Lead is the go without question. Take care using it. Find smaller hits better than large swinging and hitting.

Years ago my wife used one of these hammers and never had a problem getting them off or on. No problem with them coming off also she was able to tighten them without bashing them.

The roadster factory has a couple of different hammers. I bought a 3 pounder to use on my SPF. Not heavy enough had to use the 5 pounder that came with the car but the wheels had never been off in 2+ years. The 3 pounder now works

Thanks for the eBay link. I just spoke to the owner, "John", and he told me about the manufacturing process. He can even reform a used one, so being local (Gardena, CA is about 30 minute drive from North O.C.) is positive, too. He sounded like a good guy so I'm going to cut him a check for one of the 5 pounders. Hey, 14 bones plus another 5 for shipping....hard to "beat" that! :D :D :D

Thanks all, I ordered a 5 lb lead hammer from John shipped here for $23.31,He sounded like a decent guy

My Dad used to use a 'THOR' rawhide hammer like this one,

but he had hide in both faces, not copper in one as here.
(from a UK site here : )
