Stellings & Hellig air filter horsepower numbers

Hi Guys
I just finished some dyno work on a friend's engine and can post some definitive numbers on the horsepower loss with the little chrome lids seen on so many Cobras.
On dual quads, with K&N air filters, the Stellings are down an average of 8 to 11 horsepower verses no air filters.
Torque numbers were hardly affected at all.
These numbers are for a FE tunnel port @ 6000 rpm with horsepower in the 550's.

Hey Mike,
Have you by chance tested an FE single-carb setup comparing one Stellings filter and Chrome lid compared to one 8" K&N filter and 8" K&N topflow lid?

If I'm understanding your post above, you've tested the dual setup only so far - correct?. I'm curious to know what an FE single-carb setup would do in comparison. It would also be interesting to compare the smaller Stellings and 8" K&N to the 14" K&N filter and top.

Thanks,
Duane

Ditto on the K&N Xtreme top lid test. Though it is my understanding that they are only offered in 9", 11" and 14" sizes.

Guys: I can answer part of that since my engine was on the stand in August of last year. Single carb - 427 ci - side oiler.
w/ H&S air assembly 523 hp
w/ NO filter 543 hp
w? K&N Dual quad oval a/f 534 hp

The trq. was affected a little but I was quite surprised at how LITTLE the H&S filter robbed power! At only a 4% loss it pays to filter and have the classic look. IMHO

Duane,
I plan on running that exact experiment in the next week or two, just need to find a day off without rain to take the car to the chassis dyno.

I'll let you know what I find.

I look forward to the results Chaplin!

Here is a thread with the specs on the K&N http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/show...ght=K%26N+flow

Do a search on 'K&N flow'. Lots of information.

I would think that the effect would be worse on a single carb motor because of the size of the carbs.

I currently have one of the big 14" x 3" K&N air cleaners and a stub stack. All of it is coming off for a Stellings and a good ole turkey pan. Since I have tons of hood clearence I am going to stack two of them for every day use. This will flow as much as my carb does so I am not expecting much if any seat of the pants feel between the two.

By the way the Xtreem lids do come in a 9" (nothing smaller) but I know a number of guys that use them on top of the stelling cleaner for daily use and clame there is a groove where the filter fits nicely into. Lid is about .8" larger in diameter than the filter. The Xtreem lid flows 100 CFM. Accordind to K&N.

This is true. That was how I had mine set up until recently when I put on a 14" filter with Xtreme top. I'll let you know how the experiment comes out. But Rick, don't get too excited, I will NOT have any Excel spread sheets. :p

I had my car on a chassis dyno about six weeks ago and saw essentially no difference. I have a FE 427, dual quads with the S&H and K&N filters. In fact the no filter run was slightly lower in both horsepower and torque but I don't think the numbers were significantly different.
