Aero Screen
Hi All,
In order to save a bit of time and have my car ready for the Aussie Cobra Nationals in October I've decided to use a small Aero Screen instead of the full windscreen and wipers. I've spoken to my engineer and He says it'll be OK to register it like this. This means legally I won't need to fit wipers, winshield washer or a demister to get it on the road!! I'll fit them later when I have more time. It also means I'll have a bit of spare cash to spend on the stuff the car needs to get on the road. So what I need now is some pictures of Cobras with Aero Screens so I can work out a design for the brackets etc. There must be a few out there so show me your screens! Cheers Mike |

After browsing through the galleries I've come to the conclusion that Pat has built the nicest looking Aero screen in my opinion.

Being full width does it still qualify as an aero screen?
Will it pass without wipers and demister? Is it made of glass or plastic? How far will it flex at speed? I know that is alot of questions but trying to be practical here |

Hi Mike,
The screen is made from 3/16ths Lexan - get the hardened variety, 9" X 48". The attachment "bracket" is made from .040 aliminum that I stretched to shape following the "footprint" of the original windscreen so that if I go back to the big heavy glass screen the mounting holes will be hidden. Pat |

That Cobra of yours is rolling Art. For the bracket did you start out by folding a straight strip of aluminium at the right angle and then stretch the bottom edge using a lancaster or similar stretching tool? Lancaster I think a friend of mines Dad has bought the shrinker and stretcher so I might be able to borrow one. Or was it careful hammer and dolly work? Aero screen option - driver only

Showed my contract metal shop the pictures here. They have suggested using a 90 degree aluminium strip ( foldit up) and rolliing it and using slight pressure by hand. They build metal collars this way and felt you could easily do it with basic tools. The drivers side screen measurements are; 15mm x 15mm x 90 degrees material used. 480mm wide (long). 75mm - 80mm to top or arc of frame from base line. (Make sense - this is the arc you draw). Use 5mm stainless button heads at 80mm centres for base and 3 of same to attach screen to screen. These measurements are off my neighbours MGA and the way he has attached his. Just in case you want to use a drivers side only screen. I like that idea. Thanks for the thought. :eek: Good to see they may find a class for us. I used a metal stretcher - do NOT bend it at 90 degrees - I bent mine to about the angle I wanted - something a little flatter than stock. You have to then use the stretcher on both planes about the same amount as the "curve" is vertical and horizontal. Anneal first and get a few extra sheets cut and bent so you can practice first (if you are new to this). Pat |

My screen is about a 45 degree angle, I guess with the short 9" high screen it might be a mistake to do at 45, if thats what you mean! I have available a shrinker and stretcher all on high stands so before they go back I will give it a go! |
