Sidepipe Surgery

What makes up a sidepipe? 4 curved tubes, a collector, a round muffler, and a turnout? If so, has anyone ever cut out the muffler and installed a different one? I'd like to get away from just the "baffled" Harley sound.....maybe splice in a set of Dynomax/Borla/Magnaflow round race mufflers...maybe something with a little more gurgly sound...

Is this possible?

You can do anything you want, it is a matter of cubic dollars.

I think it is! Basically all these side pipes are is Glasspak welded to a header adapter and a turn down terminator.

I am thinking about cutting my mufflers off next fall and welding another set of mufflers on and then have them re-chrome plated. Has to be cheaper than buying new ones each couple of years.

I had the muffs cut out of my sidepipes, new glass packs welded in, and the whole works ceramic coated when the old ones started rusting from the inside out. After 3 years they just keep sounding better and better. Last Sunday I set off a car alarm at idle. Does it get any better than that?

If I were to do it again, I'd have flanges added to the end of the collectors so changing mufflers would be a bolt-on affair. Plus, you could have some straight pipes fabbed up for those times when you really need to make a statement.

On my BDR sidepipes, the muffler was way to restrictive, looking for a more freer exhaust, I ordered some tubes from DR GAS. They are 3.5 inches in dia with a 90 on exit end. They even cut the 90 end to match the exit end of original sidepipe. Had them swedge other end to slide over existing end of pipe after 4 into 1 union. Bought some Vortech cones from summit, welded them in just a little past collector, also put in one of the little insert mufflers we use to run on our IMCA dirt cars, wallah!! now have free flowing exhaust with a very authoratative sound. The pipes then got ceramic coated looks real good being a straight smooth tube with no buldge for muffler showing.

A couple of years ago there was a fellow that frequented the site who was from Arizona. He had a business that manufactured the actual mufflers that were used by many of the viewers, myself included. The business was Arizona Muffler and seemed to be well received. I understand he ultimately closed up shop. I was hoping someone would buy the tooling and continue the business there certainly seems to be a demand for it. I think "Hersch" knew him.

Blykins,

I've been driving the Arntz for 17 years, now. A few years ago, I began having trougle hearing normal conversations. I realized that it was the blown-out glass packs that was causing the hearing loss. I bought new double flow mufflers from Stainless Steel Specialties to bring the noise level down. I have regained most of my hearing now, but I wear ear plugs when the hardtop is on the car.

Some people have commented that my car is quieter than the average Cobra. I just smile when they say that. Because I can HEAR them say that!

Rick,
He retired and sold his equipment to a guy that makes truck mufflers only, the ones for semi's. I talked to him when I redid my mufflers. He used to make the pipes for Shelby back in the day.
I got my mufflers from JC Whitney, 3" ID, cost less than $100 for both including shipping.
Ciao,
Shawn C

Cool guys....I think I may have to do a little surgery.....I've got Dynomax Ultraflows on my Mustang GT....I like the way they sound and they come in a round muffler too....Plus Magnaflow, Flowmaster, and Borla make them too.....

I bought new headers and side pipes from EM. I paid a $70 upcharge for the Low Back option. The side pipes were a little short ( too much between the rear fender and the turn out and I was concerned about what ifs.Like some local officer determining that my pipes were( in his opinion ) too loud. When I cut the pipes apart. I found my pipes were made from their normal muffler and didn't look ass I was told it would. Before I had anything ceramic coated I made preperations for all the what if's. I made it so I could add or remove Car Chemistry disk units to the collectors.EM sent the new turn outs and a pair of LoBaks muffelers.I had a welder TIG SS flanges for V-clamps onto the collectors, the turn out elbow, and three different pairs of 3 1/2" muffelersirs usual muffeler ,LoBak, and open pipe. I had all ceramic coated . I can add or remove and the Car Chemistry disk ,units change between three dirrerent pairs of muffelers, and even run collector to turn out if I desire all with a wrench.
I've also gotter bit by the hot side pipes.I use the perferated SS pipe guards that Finish Line sells. It only takes a second of inattention.

Hello Mike H,
do you happen to have any detailed photo's of your system, sounds like a great idea !

Brent Mills 04-27-2004 11:34 PM

I cut the crap out of my sidepipes from my red Cobra. They had baffles running the length of the pipe and it sounded terrible. Cut those suckers out and welded in a pair of dynomax bullit muffs and great sound! Fun project.

I have an 'auger' style baffle, very little restriction, great sound and never wears out!

I'm with Rally Snake, Ear Plugs or Hearing Aids, your call.

I really like the bolt on setup my side pipes have. No plans to chrome or coat. I LIKE the paint! Easy touch up and maybe I want to change colors to silver or white next week!

Hey Mr. Mills...you got any pics of the Dynomax's that you put in? Those are the ones that I'm looking at....curious to see how they look spliced in a pair of pipes.....

blykins 05-14-2004 01:38 PM

Are these the Dynomax's?

If so, you remember what size they were? What length...pipe diameter?

Those are the ones. I used 3" inlet/outlet and I think there were two different lengths. If you go to summit racing, you'll see them described there. Actually, here's the link to the muffs. http://store.summitracing.com/produc...earchtype=ecat
