SPF clutch chatter in reverse only?
Anytime when backing up my SPF, the entire car chatters and shakes and the sidepipes shudder up and down. The clutch operation is excellent in any forward gear but backing up is difficult. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance. |
I bought a old 52 Ford when I was in high school from a uncle and it chatterd in reverse I told him he bought a set of motor mounts & trans mounts told me to put them on it quit %/

I agree with Junket on the motor mounts. If you are running the stock rubber mounts there is probably a tear in one of them.

I'm not familiar with how SPF mounts their differential, but if the front mount bolts up from the bottom, that's another place to look.

Sounds to me like the flywheel is glazed over or the clutch disc has a bad, worn, broken spring. You can load the engine with the brake on, and see if the engine moves (worn mounts). But I know that car is clean! Its been in traffic too much. check the clutch. :) Ted. |

I may be going out on a limb here, but my Backdraft does the same thing, she has only 20 miles on her. I think it is due to verry short driveshaft conbined with the tight posi-trac unit conbined with the short wheelbase conbined with the fat tires conbined with your butt almost sitting on the diff gives that problem while trying to back up slowly. It gives no problem going forward what so ever. I used some pretty nice pieces building my car, pretty much convinced it is not the motor mounts or any parts abnormalities. It has to be the "combination", really no joking!!! My pro-street mustang had the same problem, it had a motor plate, spool in the rear with a powerglide, it to is a fairly short wheelbase car. DON |
Thanks for all of your responses. It's time to get it figured out as nice weather is really here to stay in Denver.

Excessive pinion angle could be causing it as well. If one of the mounts is flexing or torn you could be getting some binding in the U-Joints when in reverse.
