Single axel trailor?
Since my car only weighs #1600 lbs, I only need a single axle trailor for quik runs to the track(35miles away) anybody see any out there, I'd like to just buy one, don't have time to design/build one. thanks

Mr. Bruce, that may be tough. The axle has to be rated to handle the load of the car plus the trailer. The most popular axles used are rated at 3,500 Lbs. Since the trailer will most likely weigh 1,500 or so lbs, that limits the size of car that can be towed to 2K or less. And since axles/brake assemblies cost around $250, most manufacturers just put on two which raises the load capacity accordingly. You should be able to find a nice 14' trailer with tandem axles and brakes (required almost everywhere) for very cheap.

Not much help, but here is Cal Metals ride back in the day. Looks like a single axle worked then!

R U SURE?
Just a comment. Unless your running a very light motor ie aluminum 4 cyl. I'd be very skeptical of a 1,600 lbs weight.
Have you weighed it on a certified scale? Or, perhaps, the car is made out of something other than fiberglass? Just don't want to see your car get wrecked because of a miscalculation. |
Thanks guys, already got an 18' dual axel trailer.Looking to travel light, thro sum stuff in the van and run to the track. A nice short 12' trailer, I can keep in the back yard and horse it around to cut the grass under it. Lynn Park hauls one of his zillion dollar cars on a single axel trailer, so I figure one of my poor man specials will be ok for the 35 or so miles. And yes ,it does weigh 1600lbs.

I have a single axle trailer that I have hauled a number of Cobras on. It has hydaulic surge disc brakes, tilt bed, 14' long. If interested I will send some pictures & price.

I have seen Lynn's all aluminum single axle and very light trailer, hauling his also very light 289 racecar.
It is a superb and very low setup, with beautiful complete flooring and built in ramp mounts and tie downs. I would love to duplicate it. Knowing Lynn a little tiny bit, I would be very surprized if it had less than 3500# axles (if not 7000#) and very fine tires. He is willing, however, to hazard a single tire failure and full loss of load support, in exchange for easy of hand moving, lighter weight and less drag. Axle breakage is not really the issue here. So, he is not likely to be using $30 tires to support his quarter-million-dollar load, is he? |
Mr. Bruce,
Just saw this ad in the local SCCA rag. May be too long for what you're looking for, but the price seemed nice! "Single axle 18ft. tilt trailer. New electiec brakes. Has tire racks, steel ramps. Excellent tires. Ideal for small bore GT of prod. $500. John (703) 528-4871." |
