Expired 'Registration'?
 

Hello, I'm new to the community and somewhat new to kit cars in general so I hope this question hasnt been asked a thousand times before :o

I am in California and I began my registration process in April of 2003. Aparently my 'registration' on the car has now expired. For a number of reasons (namely not having enough time to work on the car to enable it to pass the smog inspection) I have not completed the registration process, but I still need to be able to drive the car to a smog station to be inspected. Is there any way I can renew this 'registration' in order to enable me to drive the vehicle to a smog ref or will I be forced to trailer the vehicle?

go to the DMV and get a temporary permit it will run you about $15.00 for 30 days Bill E

You will not need to repay the initial fees. You simply must pay the fees going forward and perhaps a small penalty. The longer you wait the greater the penalty.

You say your registration expired? Were you in under the SPCNS (SB-100) guidelines which allows you to forgo future smog checks? There are 500 of these slots issued every year. They are good for 12 months. If your SPCNS time elapsed you may need to get another number. The 500 for 2004 were gone in 45 days.

You needed to get your car to the BAR Bureau of Auto Repair before your year expired. You may want to look into this. SPCNS numbers are pretty coveted and you will want to get into the DMV early next year for another one.

If you get your car finished and your SPCNS number has expired there are few options for you. You can continue to try to operate on a "temp" the red paper tag the DMV issued you in the first place. This is problematic if your local DMV is like most. They have the discretion to issue these or not issue these for extended periods. Generally they issue them for no longer than 90 days.

The second option is... If the engine in your car is pre-smog. That is from a vehicle which had no or limited smog devices you can simply go to the BAR Referee and get that verified, along with your inspections, insurance the DMV will register your car like it would any other. You will still be subject to bi-annual smog checks enless or until you re register your car under the SPCNS (SB-100) guidelines.

Option three is pretty ugly... If your engine in your car came from a late model vehicle you may install all the smog devices that engine had on the car for the year it was made. i.e. a 1985 302 mustang. That car had 02 sensors, catalytic converters, egr valve, etc. If all those devices are present you can register it like that with a trip to the BAR to verify the equipment is there and working properly.
