CA DMV - Now I know why moslims go Jihad
 

I never understood how some moslims go blowing themselves up for a cause? I have now dealt with the CA DMV and completely understand the Moslim's point of view :-)

Of course, the above line is a joke (and maybe not a very good one during these times), but the incompetency, lack of skill, and the plain old ignorance of some government employees can drive a person nuts.

Seeing how some people are getting refused their SB-100 applications, I thought those would be reissued. After all, there are 70 million vehicles (per DMV) on California Highways, and allowing 500 vehicles to pass under SB-100 is really not enough. Surely the DMV wouldn't WASTE these registrations if some people who originally applied don't qualify.

After spending the ENTIRE morning on the phone with the DMV, I have found that NONE of those SB-100 registrations that were turned down due to vehicle's qualifications will NOT be reissued to anyone else!!!!!!!!!!!

So let's say (complete estimate on my part) that 100 people got turned down for various reasons. Then only 400 certificates will be issued, NOT 500. What a friggin waste!

And we went to Liberate IRAQ??????? Who will liberate CA?????

Just spoke to a dealer who specializes in selling these types of vehicles and they stated that the DMV even holds BACK 200 SPCN's for themselves (for their own past and present mock-ups). No one is keeping track of what's happening to these 200 numbers. Again, this comes from a dealer who I will not mention by name - and yes, this would be considered here-say, I have not verified this with any other sources.

Another member contacted me and asked for the names of the people I spoke to at the DMV who told me applications that have been turned down will not be reissued to someone else. I felt bad that I didn't get any names, so I contacted the DMV once again.

This time I got names (and I forwarded them to the person who had asked me). Once again, they stated these numbers will not be reissued.

Then I stated "what if some environmentalists get in line on Jan 2nd and get all the SPCN's - then later, the DMV finds out these people didn't even have a car - what happens? She stated that she understands my point, but there's nothing they can do about it.

There are DMV's all over the country that are a mess. California is definately not an exception. It usally takes 2 trips to get one thing done here. I have made a habit of going to the CA dmv site before a visit to get my facts straight, they will not :mad:

And anyone who is for universal health care can now picture all those dmv bureaucrats with surgical masks on! YIKES!

Hyde D. Baker is correct when he states that they are ALL a mess.
We don't have all the CA type problems in Florida, but here you can go to one office and title your car as a '65, then go to a different office and be told that it must be titled as year of manufacture, i.e. 2003.
The MCO actually works against you here if you want a '65. You should keep your MCO in your pocket and just tell them you built it from scratch. Live and learn.

Okay, this is certainly something to keep in mind if I move to CA.

What happens if I have my 66 regiatered in MI and I move to CA? Do I have to go throught this same deal? Or, is the information taken from my MI title and used for the CA title?

Trularin, any used vehicle brought to CA from out of state must be inspected by the DMV. That's the first step. If your car is currently titled as a "65 Ford" from another state, you can continue telling the CA DMV that your car is a 65 Ford, and depending on the stupidity of the inspector, he may believe you and you won't have any problems registering.

The issue is HOW did you get a 65 Ford title in the first place. If you used a title company (such as TU), then the DMV may nail you since they have the customer lists of these title companies. If you went to a junk yard and took a VIN from a 1965 Ford and affixed it to the vehicle yourself, and then titled the car as a 65 in your own state, then the DMV will have no record of this and you may very well get away with it.

To eliminate all worries about getting caught in the future, you should register in CA under SB-100. This means the first 500 APPLICANTS (whether they qualify or not) will get a shot at this special registration. If the DMV finds you don't qualify, then you have just wasted the space for someone else who could have gotten an SB-100. My surprise is that these SB-100 registrations are not reissued to someone else who will qualify. And that is a load of crap.

The above is all that I've gathered from my research. It may be right, and it may be wrong. Your mileage may vary :-)

Don't count on it. What you need to do is utilize a sub-bill of SB100, which is SB1578 (which allowed for the registering of specialty vehicles that are used and brought in from out of state). It falls pretty much under the same SB100 guidelines, except you don't necessarily have to have all the original paperwork. I bought my car from its previous owner in Texas and went through this with nothing more than the TX registration and a Bill of Sale (an "honest" Bill of Sale, I might add).

The DMV is very wise on all this now. Just having a '65 registration for a "Ford convertible" won't work its way through the system like it used to. You will be flagged. It's a hassle but can be done. Hopefully the lawmakers in Sacramento will figure out that they are stifling a revenue-producing market and will relax SB100 to include more certificates and a huge amnesty program for those that skirted the system in the past.
