Hi Kevin,
I actually placed a deposit on a kit in early December, 2005.
I was really anxious to build the kit.

While the guys are really nice, I never came close to getting a kit and in late April, 2006, was actually farther away from a delivery than I thought I was in December.

Since the kit designer was sort of removed from everything in the the production of parts, chassis, etc., the whole operation seemed sort of stalled.

They cheerfully gave me my deposit back and I bought a Superformance kit in June.

While the Superformance is a really nice car, I was a bit disappointed in not getting the kit I actually wanted.

I have had no communication with anyone at CER since then, I have not heard of any kits actually being delivered other than the original 8-10 kits.

If they do get to the point where they can actually deliver, the price is still worth it as many of the extra items which most kits do not include are still included with the CER.

If you are interested, you should contact them and see if they are actually producing kits. They were at Chassis #1014 in May of last year so you might see what number they are up to now.

Good luck,

Jim

The similarity between the FFR and the CE body is not by coincidence. From what I recall, TriStates offered a replacement body for the FFR. (still on the web site) The CER guys were in a joint development project with TriStates of the now CER chassis. They've since had a falling out and the CER folks continued the development of the chassis and brought it to production. At that time, you could put the CER body directly on the FFR chassis with no mods.

Jim- I have heard the reason why production is slow, or even stopped, is that the cobra building is second to their main business, a machine shop. I guess they would rather stop production rather than have a mess with back orders. I would do the same and commend them for doing so. It's too bad you had problems with delivery but, I'm sure you will enjoy your Superformance. It's also a quality car. As a matter of fact, I was able to see a SPF coupe at a show. I never did find the owner but, the quality was great. Really wanted to talk with him. GET SOME PICS in your gallery ! Must see.
TButtrick- that's interesting. I wonder if they have changed the body now with less of a rake ? I'll try to get a hold of them.

Any updates on CER and are they still in business? Does anyone know what's going on with this company? I have a friend who is having some issues with his car and was wondering if they are still around and offering support to their customers.

Thanks, John

Guys,
I've got CER #1008, and my car was in the Kit Car Mag March 2007 issue. I built the car at their shop in Manteca. As I recall, the car was designed for the 17" wheels, but by going to smaller brake rotors, and etc., you would be able to fit 15" wheels. My rear tires are WIDE, 335's. Fit and finish was done by Ken Pike of Ken's Custom Auto in Yuba City. He has lots of experience in painting/fitting Cobras - alll types. He's good. The cantilever billet coil over suspension is pretty. Would like to do a comparsion with other cobras. Had it aligned in Mt View by Custom Alignment. Another CER owner says the SPF has a softer ride, although it could be the valving on our coilover shocks (Aldan Eagles - Road Race) or SPF 15" vs our 17", tire pressure, etc. Interior, carpet, seats, etc is all up to you. You can delete or add to your specs. I've got Mercedes carpet with heat insulation backing, but you can imagine how hot the foot boxes still get in the summer (add the Cobra Earl vent kit!). Wiring is a Painless kit.

Cutting Edge made changes along the way. They built a few kits, improved the design, built a few more kits, imporved the design. I started building my kit in March 2005, showed the body/engine/frame at Knott's, worked 1 day a week and was finishing it in the parking lot at the Nugget at the Bash 2006.

I'll be at the Bash with the Speedfreaks booth, (and track day #888). They dyno tuned my car with 505 hp at the rear wheels. Car pic is also on the BACC web site.

My rapidly aging brain cannot rmember which it is.

Drop them a line and ask.

The finished car has a decidedly agressive rake to it and is a bit lowered when compared to other kits.

All in all a very impressive car.

If i can get a good price for mine, I think i will try to build this one.

Jim

it definetely has an excellent stance...

TButtrick 03-29-2007 04:27 PM

If Cutting Edge, with their frame, got together with Hurricane and their body and marketed a $15K kit, they'd clean up.

Maricopa 03-29-2007 06:47 PM

It is either the front end based on FFR and the rear end based on ERA or vice versa.

It's the same as the Tri-States body (their former partner). Basically an FFR body with a rounded trunk, rolled cockpit edges and slightly wider rear fenders with more correct-looking rear skirts.

800hp 03-29-2007 07:00 PM

Todd , it's all the parts in the car that add up all the wilwood stuff is almost 5k alone. this was never ment to be a upgraded factory five. also everyone comments on the rear of the car all perkey it's not the body. it is the birdcage in the trunk area the first 2 cars where like that and thats it. all the rest where lowered down 2.5 inches just like the ERA rear fender shape.Jim

decooney 03-29-2007 08:32 PM

Hunker down?

When I had my car at Ken's place a few years back, we must have spent at least 45 minutes comparing the lower rear section of my ERA to the CER, looking at how to reform it to hunker it down a bit more. I sort of wondered if anything ever came of that.

Are there any pics of the updated dropped rear section?

800hp 03-29-2007 11:19 PM

Duane, look in the latest issue of kitcar mag cer008 is in the mag with some good picts of the rear of the car.Jim

Maricopa, you are WRONG! cutting edge has it's own molds of the cer body NOT a tri-states body. look at the hood, doors and decklid details ,wheel openings , oval, oilcooler opening and rear fender shape. I know I built it with parts from lot's of body's ffr era fiberfab.

SF_SN888KE 03-31-2007 09:16 AM

I believe the newer CER's have a lower trunk floor of about 1" and are more "square". They took out the angles, expanded under the rear fenderwells and made more trunk space. This also changed some of the turnk "frame" and made manufacturing and welding the supports easier and a little faster. The fuel tank might have been redesigned to accomodate the lower trunk floor. I believe the rear suspension and body supports remains the same. If I had waited 6-9 months I would have a much larger trunk to fit more stuff for attending the BASH! (CER #1008)

SF_SN888KE 03-31-2007 09:21 AM

Oh, I also forgot. When I was building my CER at their shop in 2005, there was a change that dropped my rear body. Only the first couple of CERs had a higher rear. There is a pic of an early CER (silver, no stripes) in the November (?) Kit Car
