Black Wheels?

Starting to make final plans-car will be here in week or two. I have been reviewing lots of pictures & posts. I have noticed in a few Old Shelby International Assembly room pictures there seems to always be a couple of 427's in the background with Black Wheels.
Seems like I have not seen any replicas with the black wheels. People don't like them? Were these just slave wheels? Were any ever delivered with the black wheels?

Just curious. Thanks

I will make the assumption that you are talking about entirely black wheels? I am under the impression that SAI in the 60's dipped and the magnesium wheels in a zinc type solution to help avoid oxidation. Then they would polish the edge. This is the reason the centers turned gold and the edges silver. Once oxidation occured the edges looked more like they were primer grey.

That being said brake dust and magnesium turns black. Example CSX3026 in the Youtube video with FIA mag wheels. Remember these were race cars so cleaning and polishing wheels were low on the list of "to do's". Many of the wheels were painted white, FIA, and the rest black or grey centers if not left as per OEM.

CSX3020 with Magnesium Halibrand: http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/s...0&ppuser=22813

CSX3102/3005 black:(I think aluminum Replica wheel)

CSX3197 with I think Magnesium painted wheels:

I think CSX4027, Steve Sunshine, has the centers all black. Great look and painting can bring the vintage look to life without years of setting.

Maybe someone else can clarify.

Jeff

I also remember seeing a 427 with all black wheels and I love it.

Many comp car wheel centers were painted either white, black or grey. I have a set of original magnesium Halibrands that came off of a CSX comp car. The wheel centers were painted grey in the 60s. I got them like that and also with the original tires. I chose to have them repainted with black centers. Here are pictures of the wheels in both colors.

I flipped through several of my Cobra reference books and all I could find was the magnesium or flat grey colored wheels or painted wires on the original cars including the coupes. Even the dragon snakes and El Cid had grey 5 spokes.

The Carol Shelby dual paxton supercharger car that sold for 5.5 million dollars recently at BJ auction had black wheels with a polished lip. I have a set of fake spinner type wheels that have black inserts too, just haven't really run them on my car for more than a couple days.

I’ve been playing around with different coatings over the last few years trying to duplicate that “vintage” look.

On page 69 of the Book "Essential AC Cobra" is a photo of S.C.'s personal car with twin Paxtons. It is listed as being from an article in Road & Track's, 1968 road test of the car. It has different wheels than what is shown in the photo here and what appears to be chrome side pipes. Very shallow depth to the front wheel in the magazine photo.
Hyde, I like the whole dare to be different look of your car. Works for me...

Nice treatment on the car.

Saw a little sign on the back of a Mini vintage racer you might want to copy, it said "Hoosier Daddy?"

cheers,

Thanks for the compliments. I wasn't really trying to be that different. I just chose the grey & black so I didn't have to be another Blue or Red cobra. Those colors really look best on the car but I wanted to have my own color. As far as the Hoosiers they come in at a better price point & look the period. But back to the "Black Wheels", it's a look that seems a bit more subdued than the polished aluminum or bare look that you see on a lot of cars. It's kinda hard to give that dressed up look with a set of flat black wheels. It's all in personal preference I suppose:)

Beautiful car Rad. Now show us some pictures of it with a nice set of beefy slicks hitting a corner at full tilt! :)

Of course I am kidding but I really do like the way you have your Cobra set up and your choice of black.

Clois
