Insurance question

My husband and I are thinking of purchasing a new ERA cobra. The insurance carriers I have spoken to limit driving to "pleasure drives". If I want to drive it to grocery shopping, I wouldn't be covered. Anyone have a reasonable insurance company that would allow me to drive about 5000 miles and stop where I want? Any other issues I should be aware of prior to buying?

Go to this WEB site and search for a local agent. http://www.anpac.com/products/p_c/chrome/default.aspx
Their CHROME package is exactly what you are looking for. My policy has a stated replacement value with excellent coverage and very reasonable rates. It's worth checking them out.

Jim beat me to it, that was one of the things I like best about the ANPAC CHROME policy. I can drive it to work, coffee, whatever. Their prices are darn good, I ended up switching my home owners policy and my daily driver vehicles to them as well.

Good luck in your search.

State Farm is another you might want to check with. I don't believe that they put any restrictions on mileage or where you drive the car to. The trick is to find an agent that is familiar with that type of policy.

Midwest Classic is who I went with. No onerous restrictions and 6000 miles/year. Price was competetive. Robbin Terry is the rep. (888)271-4000.

I tried the local Anpac rep here and they never returned my calls. Didn't give me a real good feeling about how they might handle claims.

My cobra is always a pleasure to drive...LOL

(I have State Farm ins.)

I was with ANPAC for the first year I had my Cobra on the road. It was a very good policy at a reasonable price. Last year the company eliminated its local agents and all business was then done directly with the company office. That is not necessarily bad, but I wanted a local agent to deal with, not a voice on the phone a thousand miles away. At renewal time I switched to Midwest Classic and was very happy with Robbin Terry, even if he is a thousand miles away. He only insures replicas, hot rods, classics, etc., so he knows what we want and need. All this happened after my State Farm agent told me coverage was no problem, and that was not the case, at least here in Florida. Apparently State Farm works well for others who live in different states.

With State Farm it depends upon the agent. My brother-in-law is a State Farm agent in Michigan and says he likes to write policies for these cars because he rarely has to pay out on them. Unfortunately, they wouldn't let him write a policy for me since I'm in Maryland.

I have American Hobbyist but FFR hosts a list of Cobra Insurance companies.

The reason a lot of insurance companies stopped issuing insurance for Cobras is un-like other collectable cars that stay parked in the garage, the Cobra was driven hard on the streets with high horsepower engines and we had multiple deaths during many accidents and having written cheap policies and now having to pay off millions in claims stopped writing Cobra insurance.

I'm now in the process of insuring mine with Classis Insurance, I heard a lot of positive comments about them here on the forum & Robbin Terry has been great to work with.

My mileage limit is 3000 but I'm thinking about raising it to 6000 miles. This is my first Cobra & not sure if 3000 will be enough.

I wonder how many miles the average Cobra gets put on it in a year? Considering winter, I figure I'll only be driving it about 9 months out of the year. Any thoughts/comments?

I've been swapping e-mails with Robbin this morning, he'll be out of the office traveling today but he said he will be checking his e-mails periodically.

You might want to drop him an e-mail at robbin@midwestclassicins.com

Just recieved my call... $501.97/year 100/300 coverage, $250 ded comp/coll 5000 miles/year

Signing up today...

Worth the extra $100 for the additional mileage. You will probably drive it more the forst year of ownership, so I would recommend the 5K.

I'm impressed... Within 30 mins, Robin quoted, bound and had my insurance cards in my hand!!

I will recommend him all day long to everyone....
